A meaningful conversation opens up the world for a child, but sometimes it slips away when in a busy home or classroom where we rush to ensure the routine is on track.

But remember, it is an essential part of your child's learning journey.

Open-ended questions help to encourage sustained shared thinking, and extending narratives in such a way unlocks the ability of the child to:

Open-ended questions involve the "wh" questions and require more than a simple "yes" or "no" answer, encouraging children to elaborate and think deeper.

The beauty is that you can't predict their answer and will discover new and unique things about them.

I loved asking my students questions like, "How did you know how to do this?". My favourite answer was, "It was in my brain already!".

Remember to include open inquiries in your child's narrative today!

Do you ever find yourself and your child researching questions together? It's a great way to bond and learn something new!

🌟 It encourages curiosity and critical thinking.
🌟 It helps build a strong parent-child relationship.
🌟 It can be a fun and educational experience.

When my children were in the 3-6 year range, their favourite question was, "Why....?"

You don't have to know the answer to their enquiries immediately, and when you look up answers together, you teach your child research skills.

Children often read books but do not enjoy them, and you can help your child love books by checking the following:

🌟 The reviews and summaries - Common Sense Media is awesome. (https://lnkd.in/ecWMxaB9)

🌟The age range. It's obvious, but consider the recommended age range mentioned in the book.

🌟The theme. Only you know what's best for your child and their current interests.

🌟The plot. If it's overly complicated, it's going to put them off.

🌟The visuals. Illustrations can be attractive and an incentive to go for the book but check that they are suitable for your child.

🌟The length. Due to short attention spans, a long book won't capture young children's attention.

🌟Getting involved with what your child loves to read opens new discussions and gives you an idea of the variety of books to offer. Follow the child. ;)

🌟Role modelling. This can't be said enough as you help to develop positive habits by example.

Remember, it takes time for new and positive habits to sink in and practice with consistency will pay off.

I loved pretending to be a teacher when I was around 6, lining up my dolls, calling out the register, running my own business, and pretending to go to conferences.

I had no idea that after so many years, I'd be right there. 😊

Don't skip reading to your child, as the benefits go beyond language and literacy development, and a good story doesn't have to wait until bedtime.

You can help your child to appreciate books more by:

🌟 Teaching them how to turn pages with care
🌟 Showing them where the title is
🌟 Talking about the author and illustrator
🌟 Showing them how to store a book when finished

No extensive book collection is needed as repetition is vital for cognitive development.

My eldest child loved the story Aladdin and at 5, she couldn't read all the words but would retell the story every night for months in her own beautiful and creative way. A big favourite even now is Martin Howard's hilarious series "Witches at War!", and it just leaves us in fits of laughter every time. (Highly recommended.)
