In Sweden, crayfish season is a festive time filled with celebrations and delicious seafood. But it also raises ethical questions about preparation methods.🦞 Should crayfish be cooked alive, and do they feel pain? We asked Lynne Sneddon, Professor at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Gothenburg for her expert take.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?
There have been many studies demonstrating the potential for pain in crabs, crayfish and lobsters. My laboratory is assessing pain in crayfish by exploring what types of pain stimulate pain receptors in crayfish and if pain relieving drugs such as aspirin prevent negative behavioural and physiological responses to pain. During the crayfish season, many people throw the crayfish alive into boiling water.

𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆?
No this is likely to be very painful and stressful for the crayfish. Studies have shown that it takes a long time for these animals to die this way and the heart is still beating two minutes later.

𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀.
We have been exploring what is the most humane and quickest way to kill crayfish and Norway lobster and have found we can use electric shock to kill these animals within seconds. We have compared this to other methods such as live chilling in ice slurry which is totally ineffective and to overdose with anaesthetics which takes over twenty minutes. We are working with industrial partners to develop equipment to humanely kill these animals in aquaculture and fisheries.

Glad midsommar! 🌸🎉

Midsummer is here, and all over Sweden we raise maypoles to celebrate. But where does this tradition actually come from? And is it true that the maypole symbolizes fertility? We asked Eva Knuts, Associate Professor and ethnologist at the University of Gothenburg.

- Like many other traditions, which we think are originally Swedish, the maypole comes to us from Germany. The earliest evidence of raising a maypole at Midsummer dates back to the 17th century. So it is not a pagan fertility symbol!

At the end of September 2022, the Nord Stream gas pipeline on the bottom of the Baltic Sea exploded east of Bornholm and one of the largest unnatural methane gas emissions ever was a fact. The methane gas from the pipeline created large bubbles at the water surface and measurements showed elevated levels of methane in the atmosphere. But much of the methane never reached the surface and dissolved in the water instead. This is according to a scientific study published in Scientific Reports.

In her speech, Vice-Chancellor Malin Broberg emphasized the importance of the university’s professors, pedagogical award recipients, and excellent teachers continuing to inspire, influence, and contribute to development.

‘Becoming a professor, receiving a pedagogical award or being recognized as an excellent teacher does not mean that you have reached an end point, but rather that you have been trusted with and have taken on a new responsibility. A responsibility to continue to drive development forward, to inspire, lead and educate the next generation of colleagues and students, and to contribute to the continuous improvement of our university.’

During the Diploma Ceremony on 22 May, 55 students were awarded medals and diplomas by Vice-Chancellor Malin Broberg. At the ceremony, students who have been active in the university's student unions were honoured.

'Your dedicated work makes the University of Gothenburg a vibrant and thriving community. Your contributions in academic monitoring, social activities, and the development of the university are immensely valuable and inspiring,' said Malin Broberg.

New to this year’s ceremony was the awarding of the Eva Wiberg Scholarship. The university's former Vice-Chancellor established the scholarship last year. The first recipient of the scholarship was the Da Capo student association.

Stress resilience is linked to increased risk of psoriasis 21/05/2024

Young adults who find it harder to cope with stress are more likely to develop psoriasis later in life. Low stress resilience when enlisting for military service involves a 31% higher risk of developing psoriasis compared to high stress resilience. This has been shown by a large register-based study at the University of Gothenburg.

On the 24th of April, Finland’s newly elected president, Alexander Stubb, paid a visit to the University of Gothenburg. Alongside him was HM the King and HM the Queen and an official delegation.

The event, which was part of the president’s state visit to Sweden, included a speech and a Q&A session for the students. One question came from Mona Marsti, who asked how the president plans to handle gender equality within international and security policies.

“In various surveys, be they about freedom or happiness, the Nordic countries always make it to the top ten in the world, the President answered. One reason is that we have come very far in matters of equality; in other words, we can influence others by presenting ourselves as an example to be followed.”

The new sea star has now been recognised and named Rhianastra isosceles. "I am both proud and blushing at the same time. This is the first time I've had a species named after me," says Rhian Waller, a researcher at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg.
