A fabulous inspiring 1st day of our AGM on the 4th December. With Marie Stenseke, GGBC chair, Stefan Örgård, Director Göteborgs naturhistoriska museum & Jenny Klingberg, GGBC director opened the AGM followed by a full day on how we can create engagement in biodiversity. Special thanks to all the members and GGBC partners that were able to attend alongside our funders BECC.

On November 30, the Region Västra Götaland in collaboration with the County Board of Västra Götaland, organised the conference “Framtid Västra Götaland” on regional development issues focusing on the theme of green transition. Climate change and fossil free energy was as usual high up on the agenda, but this year the challenges connected to biodiversity was also brought up for discussion! At a well-attended workshop, Jenny Klingberg and Viktor Elliot participated, presented GGBC as well as the projects SamBio (https://www.gu.se/en/ggbc-global-biodiversity/projects/sambio-collaboration-for-biodiversity) and Mistra BioPath (https://www.mistrabiopath.se/) and the need for increased knowledge, collaboration and action regarding biodiversity was addressed.

Calling all trainers in !!!

We have a questionnaire to collect useful tools for teaching taxonomy, as well as to create a network of taxonomy trainers. We aim to publish a list of these taxonomic resources as well as a list of trainers on the DEST.

Congratulations Göteborgs botaniska trädgård who received funding from the Interreg North Sea Region Programme for the EXPBIO project “Expanding transnational capacities to strengthen plant biodiversity and restoration in the North Sea Region”. New report published! Kew’s State of the World’s Plants and Fungi project provides assessments of our current knowledge of the diversity of plants and fungi on Earth, the global threats that they face, and the policies to safeguard them.

The conference Cities for Biodiversity takes place 5-7 October in Stockholm with many inspiring talks focusing on biodiversity in northern cities, the potential to strengthen it and how. GGBC researchers Alexandre Antonelli and Henrik Sjöman contributed to the interesting discussions.

Air pollution is a serious problem in many cities. Can trees clean the urban air from pollutants and contribute to healthier air? On Researchers night on Thursday (28 September) you are welcome to a scavenger hunt for facts at the Göteborgs naturhistoriska museum! One of the researchers you can meet is Magnus Gelang, also known as “Batman” in GGBC circuits. Magnus works as a curator at Göteborgs Naturhistoriska Museum and has many years of experience in research on bats. He will tell you more about how biodiversity of bats and health is connected.

Detta är det bästa sättet att bevara allemansrätten.

🥾 Allemansrätten grants us the opportunity to discover and experience Swedish nature. Hikes, mushroom picking, and tenting adventures are just a few of the many ways to embrace the wilderness.

🤝 With the freedom that allemansrätten provides also comes responsibility. It's crucial to respect both nature and one another while enjoying outdoor activities. Don’t leave any rubbish behind, ensure that campfirers are thoroughly extinguished, and show consideration for both people and animals.

🌲 Did you know that allemansrätten doesn't apply everywhere? For example in nature reserves. You can find valuable information about allemansrätten on the website of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket).

State of the World's Plants and Fungi Symposium | Kew Join international experts to discuss actions for conserving and restoring global plant and fungal biodiversity.

Today we welcome Anna-Lisa Wrange to GGBC! She will coordinate outreach and education through the GGBC and with science centres in the region with the aim to make biodiversity an overarching and accessible concept. The work is part of the SamBio-project (Collaboration for biodiversity - knowledge, engagement, action) financed by Region Västra Götaland.

To obtain the biggest cherry harvest, trees should be pollinated by both honey bees and mason bees. A new study led by GGBC researcher Julia Osterman at the University of Gothenburg shows yet another benefit of biodiversity!

Pollination by more than one bee species improves cherry harvest To obtain the biggest cherry harvest, trees should be pollinated by both honey bees and mason bees. A new study led by a researcher at the University of Gothenburg shows yet another benefit of biodiversity.

Large organisms may be particularly susceptible to impacts from human activities, including hunting and harvesting, as well as the stress of climate change. GGBC researcher Anne Bjorkman and colleagues have analyzed body-size trends in plant and animal communities since 1960. They found that trends varied across communities, with marine fish more consistently shifted toward smaller body size. However, biomass generally stayed stable over time, suggesting that more small individuals were present despite the loss of larger ones. TETTRIs exists to strengthen the science of taxonomy in Europe.
To achieve this transformation, we need the help of taxonomists.

In one month applications close for our funding pool of 1.8 million euros. We encourage all taxonomists to circulate the call among their peers.

We are looking for external projects that can help us:
– Index pollinator collections
– Improve access to taxonomic data
– Develop and test AI for image and sound recognition
– Innovative molecular techniques for taxonomy
– Develop training programs in taxonomy
– Involve citizen scientists in monitoring biodiversity hotspots

The deadline for sending a proposal is September 30th, 2023.

The West Coast Sea Week, Västerhavsveckan, a thematic week for the marine environment, is over for this year and as always, a huge success! GGBC member Rhian Waller and team provide us with a unique opportunity to dive down to the bottom of the Alaskan ocean in a live stream to explore areas that have never been looked at before. Through the lens of a camera on the Deep Discoverer Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) we can together with the research crew look for deep sea corals and sponges, cold seeps, water column biodiversity and examining a World War II shipwreck to assess its status. They expect to be leaving port in just a few days and will go from Kodiak to Unalaska.

We are pleased to announce that GGBC member Paola de Lima Ferreira has been awarded with one of the most prestigious prizes in taxonomy, the Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle Prize in 2023. The award was given based on her PhD thesis and contributions to understanding the diversity of the South American spiny sunflowers (Barnadesioideae, Asteraceae). Congratulations!

Den 25 april är det den internationella pingvindagen och det uppmärksammar GGBCs partner Slottsskogens djurpark genom arrangemanget ”Pingvinen och världshaven”.

Under dagen kommer Slottsskogens personal berätta om pingviner och om de utmaningar som finns för havens invånare. Du kan också se en magisk föreställning om havet, gå på pingvin-poängjakt och lösa kluriga pingvin-pyssel. På kvällen hålls en längre guidning där Slottsskogens personal och forskare från Göteborgs universitet berättar om pingviner och sälar och deras livsmiljöer. Du får också höra hur just du kan bidra till en säkrare framtid för havet och dess arter.

Programmet med fokus på barn sker mellan klockan 10-14 och guidningen som riktar sig till vuxna startar klockan 18.
