I am deeply grateful to these parents who have placed their trust in me and sent all their children to be coached under me.
When it comes to learning Math, the principles are the same, regardless of which level we are in.
Hence, once we have found the right system of learning, we just continue to implement it consistently.
Congrats to these 2 pairs of siblings who have applied the principles of learning Math and passed their exams with flying colours!
The first pair of siblings are in Secondary 2 and Primary 4, and the second pair in Secondary 3 and 2.
Your hard work has paid off!
Well done, and continue to keep up the good work!
Thank you, parents, for allowing me to share your joy.

Calling all parents who have Primary 5 or Primary 6 children and want to be involved in your children’s learning journey.
Does the following scenario sound familiar to you?
Staring blankly at the Primary School Math word problems, you uttered in total disbelief: “What kinds of questions are these? I didn’t have to deal with such word problems in my primary school days!”
And you tried coaching your children to solve the word problems via the algebra method, only to have it rejected violently by them. “Hey mom/dad,” they exclaimed, “my school teacher didn’t teach me to solve the word problems this way. I don’t understand your method at all!”
You felt like protesting but didn’t want it to escalate into a quarrel. Feeling defeated and frustrated, you plopped down on the couch and wondered: “I have already graduated from primary school, but why wasn’t I able to solve those word problems…?”
Dear parent, you are definitely not alone in this situation. I was once like you. I am Vanessa Wong, founder of Math with Van and author of a PSLE Math guidebook.
How Math with Van Can Help You and Your Children
About 12 or 13 years ago when I was preparing my eldest child for primary school, I was also shocked when I saw how different the word problems were from those encountered during my time in primary school. Alas, the solutions provided in most Primary Math assessment books or test papers are not helpful. Even though these books claimed that they contain step-by-step detailed explanations, I was confused by their explanations as I could not find any proper sequencing of the solutions.
Dumbfounded, I often asked myself: “How in the world did they come to this or that number sentence? I just don’t understand.”
It was then that I decided to delve into Primary School Math, hoping to demystify the word problems. I wanted to find the appropriate techniques that are in accordance to what are being taught in school to solve the word problems.
True enough, there are indeed must-know tricks and tips in tackling and solving the challenging word problems without having to use algebra as a main tool.
I want to impart to students practical and proven methods in solving word problems that complement what they are already learning in schools, minus the confusion.
Thus, over the years, I have established a YouTube channel (Math with Van YouTube) and page (Math with Van page), which are dedicated to sharing regularly how to go about solving Math word problems.
Message me if you would like to have a compilation of our exclusive must-know Math concepts and formulas to help your children do well in exams.
This compilation consists of both detailed workings and links to video solutions to Math questions.
How my PSLE Math Guidebook Can Help You and Your Children
To further assist parents and students, I have authored a new guidebook dedicated to helping students ace their PSLE Math.
The title of this book is PSLE Mathematics Guide to Word Problems, which is published by CPD.
In this book, I have included detailed explanations on how the steps on drawing models or number sentences come about.
Secondly, I have added some pointers that you can pose to your children. Remember not to spoon-feed them with the solutions immediately, but rather give them the opportunity to ponder on the questions.
Thirdly, I have grouped the questions according to similar concepts, so that you can observe and identify the underlying attributes of each concept.
Lastly, I have also grouped the questions according to the level of difficulty to ensure a progression of learning.

Here at Math with Van, we celebrate every effort and improvement made.
We are exceptionally honoured to share a testimony from a mother whose child was taught by us.
------------------------------------
We engaged Ms Van after seeing that Jean wasn’t benefitting from a popular tuition centre. Recommended by a teacher-friend, we felt as ease. As an educator myself, I highly recommend Ms Van to any kid who struggles with Mathematics.
Our initial intention was just to get Ms Van to revise the past Math topics with Jean, knowing that Math has been a struggle for her. Afterall, we engaged Ms Van just 3 months before the PSLE. We were happy and surprised when we saw that Jean had improved her Math score by 1 AL band!
No words can express our gratitude to Ms Van for her kind and encouraging guidance. She teaches with a heart instead of merely covering topics. Jean looks forward to the Math sessions with Ms Van every week.
Thank you so much ❤️ Ms Van.

When I started my journey of being a math tutor by first trying to teach my own children primary school math, I was shocked at how word problems have become more complex over the years. Despite having graduated with a bachelor’s degree, I was stumped by some of the primary school math questions.
Amidst the obstacles that I faced in coaching my own children, I decided that there must be some tricks and strategies to approach this new trend of primary school math questions, which were not taught in school during my younger days. I had to relearn problem solving strategies and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of math education.
And true enough, there are indeed must-know tricks and tips in tackling and solving the challenging word problems without having to use algebra as a main tool.
Model drawing is still the cornerstone of the primary school math curriculum, and it will be the main tool employed in this assessment book too.
I want to impart to students practical and proven methods in solving word problems that complement what they are already learning in schools, minus the confusion.
It is my desire to shed light on the use of modelling and logic as a powerful tool to solve any word problem.
Coming from an underprivileged background, I did not receive any tuition during my school days. Assessment books had played a significant role in my schooling years. They helped me thrive in my academic journey when I used them diligently to revise for exams. Whenever I did not get the answers right, I studied the solutions in an attempt to understand the logic behind the workings.
My efforts paid off: I did well in multiple national exams and eventually landed a spot in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Through grit and perseverance, I managed to graduate from the university.
As a mother who coaches her own children, I can understand parents’ frustrations when it comes to teaching math to their children. After all, the education landscape has changed dramatically, especially in recent years.
In the past, I benefited immensely from assessment books.
Now, it is my wish as a parent and an educator to give back to society and share what I have learnt throughout these years, so that more children can benefit from it.
This book is the fruit of my labour.
I realise the best way to approach the model drawing method is to guide students on how to use their intuition to understand the logic behind the models instead of directly providing solutions to them. Don’t worry if you do not know this method, for this book will help you.
In this book, I have included detailed explanations on how the steps on drawing models come about.
Secondly, I have added some pointers that you can pose to your children. Remember not to feed them with the solutions immediately, but rather give them the opportunity to ponder on the questions.
