Coca Cola's Plastic Problem – DW – 05/23/2023 Plastic bottles are responsible for a quarter of marine pollution. A large proportion of this comes from Coca-Cola. But with its "A World Without Waste" strategy, the company wants to change that.

What a beautiful advertisement from Tata Tea. A lesson in Climate Change
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

Today is World Environment day
The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 to focus on solutions for plastic pollution under the campaign .
The world is being inundated by plastic. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once! (One Time Plastics - OTP)
So leading to World Environment Day, for 2 weeks, I shared what practices I have adopted in my life for reducing plastic. And am posted some samples of pledges that you can also make. (See old posts!)
Today’s share is about micro plastics as part of my Pledge4planet series leading unto environment day .
Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long which can be harmful to our ocean and aquatic life. Micro plastics are inevitable when we use so much plastic in our life. Broken small bits of plastic from dipoles & bags etc thru drains reach the ocean. All the documentaries and features about plastic found inside the sea creatures are a reminder of teh impact of plastic usage on marine life.
There have been many products banned due to the micro plastic beads, especially face washes etc.
I am mindful when buying products as well as while disposing waste about micro plastics -pieces, beads & fibres. Still learning more about them and their impact on marine life.
This one relates to UNSDG 14 directly.
Please share your views & experiences as that will help reach more people
Got this in my e mail today.
Today’s share is about using disposables - One time Plastics (OTPs) as part of my Pledge4planet series leading unto environment day .
Disposables have creeped into our lives in last few years. Have a birthday party or a social or any event or office celebration or a BBQ - and the cups & plates & disposables are all there.
We all did live without them. These choices have consequences on our only planet.
Years ago all events & picnics had normal plates & spoons, can we go back to that?
Office pantry had reusables and we washed what we used, can that still be done?
Some argue washing dishes takes water & soap etc. I am not an expert, however my view is water eventually is somewhat renewable source and all eventually goes to ocean & back to clouds & some trash thru drains will reach ocean …food bits are bio degradable & if using environment friendly soap, then we are good. Adding more plastic waste to the planet is certainly not a good choice.
Personally I have refused to have tea at many events that had only styrofoam cups as well as carried my own box & spoon at another lunch event that was going to use OTPs. I carry my steel cutlery & straw set very often as well. Every spoon & cup matters to me.
How do you deal with the disposables being used around you? Please share your experience & suggestions in comments.
Today’s share is about reminding ourselves we have choices before sending to landfill, as part of my Pledge4planet series leading unto environment day .
Remember you can Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, Restore, Rethink, Respect, Repair, Regift, Remodel, Revive, Revisit, Restyle.
After evaluating all the above then Recycle is the last option to consider.
In doing above it is a constant challenge and conflict regarding time & energy as well as space in the house. However once you make an effort & start this, the avenues and options become clear to make informed choices. So many apps these days to sell and give away stuff you don’t want. Finding a match takes days and that is a challenge sometimes.
If you want to, you too can do your bit for protecting the planet by tweaking some lifestyle habits. Support the idea of increasing awareness by sharing with larger audience to plant the seed of change, for that repost with your thoughts , views & experiences.
Today’s share is about mindful grocery shopping as part of my Pledge4planet series leading unto environment day.
Of late many stores have opened in Singapore where one can take a bottle for oils & liquid detergent & shampoo.
Have been asked what is better plastic bag refill or the bottle for hand soap & detergents. Based on internet research I choose to use Persil detergent in bottles since it said “Our detergent bottles are made of unmixed plastic and are fully recyclable in communities where accepted. When the detergent is used, the empty bottles can be easily fed into the recycling process.” (https://www.persilproclean.com/us/en/sustainability/our-packaging.html #:~:text=Persil%20Liquid,fed%20into%20the%20recycling%20process.)
Also there are 2 elements production of the bag & bottle and then disposal. As I understand for production the bag is cheaper & uses less resources, however is not recyclable. Bottles on teh other hand may take more to make, but can be recycled.
Also have learnt (from internet!) that while bauxite mining takes ten times the electricity to produce a ton of aluminum vs. the same amount of glass, recycling a bottle takes 90% more energy than recycling a can. It's because of recycling efforts that cans are consistently rated as more environmentally friendly than bottles.
From my end, in Singapore patronise a chain called Scoop, they use only paper bags and they encourage bringing back the glass bottle for refill for Kombucha.
Share about similar stores and their practices in your area and do your bit for protecting the planet by spreading the information.
Noticed with glee. My new printer was packed in a bag that had a message to reuse and recycle.
