First came the acclaimed film with a screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. Then in 2014, Lee Hall’s lively version of Shakespeare in Love, landed on Shakespeare’s true medium – the stage. Shakespeare - a playwright who four centuries later, continues to hold celebrity status and remain a household name, features large in this play. We’re taken to London. To Bankside, London - the home of theatres with names like The Curtain, The Rose and of course, The Globe. Like the writings of the man himself, this play is a belter of a story. It’s a story about what made Shakespeare the lad, become Shakespeare the bard.
If you’ve already loved him, there is much to enjoy in this whimsical take on Shakespeare's life and work. And if you’re still a little coy, then this play with its swashbuckling adventure and knockabout humour will ease you into the works of this classic playwright, turning Shakespeare in Love into Shakespeare for life!
Starring Jasmine Kuah as Viola de Lesseps and and León Saint Claire as William Shakespeare.

Dear Stage Club family,
Thank you to those of you who joined us for the AGM last Sunday where I shared some of the Club’s achievements and challenges going ahead. At the suggestion of some of you who attended, I am sharing the presentation I made in the hope that this message will get out to more people.
As some of you know, when I took over as President of the Stage Club two years ago, the Stage Club was homeless. We had nowhere to rehearse, nowhere to build our sets. We have made much progress since then. I share some of these achievements in my slides. But, despite our best efforts, the Club continues to bleed financially.
Of the last 4 productions put up since Jan 2023, the first made a slight loss, the second broke even and the last two have been profitable. But the profits from our shows are not enough to cover the overheads of our new Goodman space. Performance venue rental costs have surged 30% and subsidies that were previously available have been withdrawn since January this year.
While we have been successful in securing an NAC grant to support our application to convert to a charity, the process of obtaining charity and IPC status, which would help us in raising much needed corporate donations, could take 2 years or more.
Meanwhile, our cash balances are dwindling, and our time is running out. At the current rate, unless we can implement some serious measures to help the Club raise revenue, we may have to fold the Club within a year.
I am therefore appealing for help. The Stage Club is an institution. A theatre based social club set up by British troops after the war, we trace our roots all the way to 1945. Today the Club comprises individuals from a diverse array of nationalities, ethnicities and professions, and we are proud to be able to bring this motley crew together united by a common passion for theatre.
Though we are an amateur theatre group run mostly by volunteers, we pride ourselves on delivering high quality productions. We have always believed in giving talents with little formal training or experience an opportunity to participate in our shows, and for some, our productions are an opportunity to get spotted and move on to professional career. Indeed, many prominent names in the arts scene today have roots in the Stage Club.
For many of us the Stage Club holds a special place in our hearts because it is a space for community and self-expression. Many of us would describe it as filling a void in our lives or scratching an itch that will not go away. I hope that even as we strive to raise the standards of the performing arts in this country, we do not lose sight of the critical role amateur and community groups like the Stage Club play in enriching the tapestry of our theatre scene.
So, I ask for help. This institution, with its rich history and legacy, must not be allowed to go gently into the night. At the AGM, we discussed several proposals to raise funds for the Club.
First, you can pay your membership fees. We have come up with a premium membership tier of $100 to generate more revenue and I outline in the slides the benefits of membership, including the potential savings members get if they participate in our activities.
Second, as we have recently converted our space in Goodman to include a small, no-frills performance space, you can participate in one of our “un-plugged” performance nights. We welcome members coming forward with suggestions on potential performances that might be suitable for the space.
Third, we are exploring running drama workshops for corporates and schools, and if you are interested in either hosting a workshop or know of a corporate/school that might be interested, do get in touch.
Last, but not least, you can support our next production. In October, we are putting up Shakespeare in Love, the stage adaptation of the critically acclaimed film. Tickets will be available on SISTIC within the next 2 weeks.
Since the AGM several of you have stepped forward to offer help in some way. I thank all of you who have done so. I ask the rest of you to consider how you might do the same. We need people who can take charge of activities, with a specific focus of raising funds for the Stage Club over the next 3-6 months. If you love the Stage Club as much as I do, this is the time to act.
Regards
Musa Fazal
President, The Stage Club Singapore
