The khol - also known as a mritang/ mritanga ('clay limb') is a two-sided drum, made from cow and goat skins.

The syahi - usually has a 'family secret recipe' and differs from maker to maker.

We are blessed to be able to use our own recipe, to repair this beautiful, mridang.

Edanthalai (thoppi) made from sheep skin and valanthalai(thattu) made exactly like a skin valanthalai, but with fibreglass instead.

Suitable for stick play but with lesser maintenance.

A complete Refurbishment of the Mridangam,

We thank the ALMIGHTY for giving us a chance to recreate this beautiful Deiva Vaathiyam.

The Mridangam, is said to be have been played by Nandeeshvaran himself, during Lord Shiva's Ruthra Thaandavam.
It was played with such divinity and intensity that the sounds resonated across the heavens, giving it the name Deiva Vaathiyam amongst others.
The first mridangams were made out of clay and derived from the Sanskrit words mrt(clay) and anga (limbs)
Hand-made, from Jackwood, and tuned to perfection. We thank you for giving us the opportunity to play a small part in your musical journey.

What is the Thavil?

The thavil.

Gives some of the most amazing beats if struck properly.
Native to Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, this drum is hollowed out from a single, solid block of jackfruit wood, with skins made from stretched buffalo, cow and sheep skin.

Usually accompanied by the NADASWARAM, this beauty is also commonly used in BHAJANS, NAAMASANGEERTHANAMS, URUMI MELAM VAASIPUS AND SOLO PERFOMANCES and can be played sitting down or while standing with hung by cloth over the neck.

At Bhairavi Raagaas, we do not just handcraft the Thavil, we also repair and refurbish.

This particular project of ours was by far the most satisfying. We enjoyed doing it up as it required a complete overhaul. At the end of it all, we felt like a proud mother hen.

The Jackwood was very badly damaged,

We patched up the damages, gave a new sleek look and added a personal touch to it.

Oiled up the bolts and nuts for the best tuning experience possible, added brand new skins, and finally wrapped it up with some clothes.

A complete refurbishment of a customer's thavil.
We kept the gracefully aged thavil kattai as original as possible, and added sleek silver polished steel centre ring, bolts and nuts, carefully crafted animal skin and finally added the kavasam.
A little double toned velvet cloth just for character 😊
