One life's milestone I dislike planning for clients the most is when his/her marriage fails 😔
This year alone, I was referred to three couples contemplating divorce to discuss trust planning. One already filed for paperwork, one had a one-year target, the third was going through counselling.
Two couples - husbands and wives both agreed to set up a trust to protect the children's welfare in the event one spouse remarries and does not provide for them. The third husband was trying to shield his assets from matrimonial division from his foreigner wife.
In all three cases, I encouraged them to reconsider the decision and seek professional counselling as the first option. While a well constructed trust provides some mitigation, it is never a foolproof nor a silver bullet to solve asset division issues.
But if divorce is unavoidable, then the kids welfare and protection (if they are minor) should take centre-stage in the planning process. The trust should contain the most thoughtful letter of wishes for the children, with protection, love and values transfer as foremost consideration.

Meet Su Hui Su Hui Kok , our Practice Mentor who joined Team Orion in 2016. She lives by her brand statement: Always put herself in client's shoes. Find out her journey from healthcare to impacting lives beyond finance with finexis advisory in Part 2 of her interview.
💭 You have a very defined market of young mothers. How did you get there?
I joined this industry when I was age 21. Then, I did not have a wide social network, but finexis trains its consultants well in referral getting skill. I have grown with my clients and maintained good relationships with them through their different life stages. As a young mother myself, I have been sharing my motherhood experiences with my clients. I feel it is important for mothers to have good maternity and health insurance as well as the children’s medical and education plans. Naturally, they also refer me to their friends who are mothers. That was how I get into young mother market.
💭 You are a young mother of two. Do you find it challenging to juggle between looking after your children and work?
Honestly, it is very challenging having to split my attention between family and work. With the limited time away from my young children, I am able to fix appointment with clients, but it has to be very productive. FAMILY is one of the shared values in my team, so I am glad my colleagues and leaders have been understanding and supported my work when I need to take extended time off to look after my kids.
💭 Households are hit by rising cost of living and a looming recession. What would you advice young mothers to prepare for this ‘storm’ ahead?
All airplanes safety demo will say this: “Don your oxygen mask and put on your life vest before helping your kids to do so.” To prepare for the “storm” ahead, it is even more important for young mothers to do their planning ahead before doing family planning.
Meet Su Hui Hui Kok , our Practice Mentor who joined Team Orion in 2016. She lives by her brand statement: Always put herself in client's shoes. Find out her journey from healthcare to impacting lives beyond finance with finexis advisory. Part 1 of her interview
💭 You were previously from the healthcare industry. What makes you decide to switch to the financial planning industry?
I joined the healthcare industry because I thought it was a noble job. After a few years, it got pretty mundane and I was not growing professionally. I also wanted to change a working environment. A friend asked me to try out financial planning, so I thought I’d just give it a try.
💭 You were with a tied insurance agency for 6 years. What makes you to decide to join finexis instead?
After several years at the insurance agency, I felt stagnant and not able to grow my business further. I also did not wish to do cold call and road shows for the rest of my career life. I chose finexis because finexis consultants only do referrals, which is what I wanted. finexis financial advisory platform representing many life insurers and investment fund houses also allows me to do holistic planning for my clients.
💭 Any difference?
Yes, more choices of products and services. Referrals from satisfied clients are more likely to take in my advice for their planning. The training is also very different. The first three months on-the-job-training (called Breakfast Club) was very intensive, but structured and effectively. The leadership focus on consultant’s professional growth and upgrading all the time and I was blessed with very nurturing mentors. My first three months production in finexis was already more than what I achieved in one year in my former insurance agency.

Meet Anthony, our Top Rookie who joined Team Orion in 2021. He was one of the Top 10 Rookies Qualifier in finexis as well as Top 10 net investment sales with iFAST. Let's continue to hear his journey in Part 2 of his interview. Anthony Kristanto Pribadi
4. You clinched the company’s prestigious Top Rookies Award. How would you describe your growth in the past 1 year?
💭 Yes, it's nice to receive awards like this. As far as I am concerned though, my journey has just begun. There is still a long way to go – much to learn/receive and much to share/give. Nonetheless, reflecting over the past year, I am really grateful to be able to serve my clients who each has their own needs, preference, and circumstances. Journeying with them has really enriched me with new perspectives in life.
5. For a new consultant, you also embarked on your Certified Financial Planning (CFP®) on your first year. What makes you decide to do so?
💭 I was told by senior consultants that CFP is the gold-plate standard in our industry. So, naturally, I’d like to be onboard. It’s also logical to me that, as my clients trust me with their assets, I keep improving and upgrading myself as the world of money management is so vast. While it excites me to study and explore financial strategies and solutions, I reckon that these can be quite overwhelming for most people. Hence, I strive to master the knowledge and apply relevant strategies to benefit my clients.
6. Other than life insurance, you have advised your client on investment and estate planning. What's your formula for such broad-based advisory work?
💭 Well, the formula is hard work! No shortcuts. Haha. But, thankfully, there is also a smarter way that helps with my learning, i.e. collaboration, which is encouraged in our team. I have collaborated with a few consultants who are specialized in their respective domains. At the end of the day, it is about giving my clients the best possible advice/solution with all the resources that I have access to.

1. You were in middle management of SMRT . What makes you decide to join this career?
💭 I started my first job with SMRT in 2013. Back then, I already felt the need to properly steward my money as I started to receive regular paycheck. I knew that ultimately my money was not owned by me (because I would one day die) but rather it was entrusted to me by God to manage. In 2017, I started doing my own investments and they bore decent fruits. Having been more aware of investments and money management techniques, I found out that my friends might benefit in this area. There’s a demand for good financial consultants and I thought I could be one of them. In 2021, I decided to make the switch. No regrets so far.
2. Did you explore other financial advisory firms? Why finexis in the end?
💭 Yes, I explored 3 other financial advisory firms. I decided to join finexis in the end as it is the largest outfit of the 4 I explored. With the scale comes good partnerships with other financial institutions and good systems that I can leverage as I start my practice as a financial consultant. I also like the fact that we have a subsidiary, finexis Asset Management, that we can leverage on to help our clients grow their wealth systematically.
3. I am sure starting out in an unfamiliar industry is not easy. Can you share struggles you face in the first 3 months?
💭The first 3 months of the on-the-job training The activities during the first 3 months of the on-the-job training were very demanding, not only for me but also for my wife. She often told me that she had a “missing husband.” This career also challenged many of my own assumptions and biases that I had about myself, about people, and about financial products / solutions. Thankfully, my manager and mentors helped challenge my assumptions and I grew in the process.
Meet Elia, our Practice Mentor who joined Team Orion in 2020. She lives by her brand statement: value-based advisory from the heart. 走心的价值询问. Find out her story in Part 2 of her interview.
💭 You were promoted to Practice Mentor last year. How would you describe your growth in the past 2 years?
I have grown to be more reflective, more confident, more assertive and open to learning and constantly find better way to advise my clients. And also learn to balance my own advisory work and make conscious effort to engage and encourage my mentee.
💭 One of your main client group is the Chinese-speaking, lower-middle income cohort. Can you share more about your heart for this group?
The Chinese speaking and lower-middle income group is under-served and under-represented. Most FCs do not approach them because of language barrier or lack of affordability for wealth protection or accumulation solutions. I just feel that if I were to enter this industry, there must be a purpose and I am willing to share and guide this group if they are open to consultation.
💭 You just completed the Advanced Associate Estate Planning Practitioner (Digital Estate Planning) program. That’s quite unique for a 2-year old FC. What made you decide to purse this certification?
If I can help my clients to do better planning, I am most willing to learn. This program introduced us to a holistic approach towards legacy planning – that is passing down both the family’s values and valuables. I like the planning software which model and simulate the cashflow and liquidity of a trust fund to ensure client’s wishes can be adequately funded. It can be used to model their retirement planning too.
