Happy 58th Birthday Singapore from all of us at CHI!

As part of CHI INNOVATE, esteemed members from various countries came together to participate in stimulating discussions and share ideas aimed at addressing issues in health and social care. The topics covered a wide range of essential aspects, such as improving communication among healthcare workers, promoting better accessibility for individuals with disabilities, encouraging openness to innovative approaches, and addressing critical mental health concerns.

At the end of each session, our speakers thoughtfully exchanged gifts, symbolising not just appreciation but also the spirit of gratitude and camaraderie that prevailed throughout the event. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the speakers for their invaluable contributions and for graciously sharing their unique perspectives, which have undoubtedly enriched the collective knowledge and inspired transformative actions within the healthcare community.

“Singaporeans’ health behaviours will only change with governmental interventions” - that was the topic for debate at this year’s FaceOff at CHI INNOVATE 2023!

The debate, chaired by Jared P**n, was engaging, and entertaining as debaters draw swords in the form of cheeky references and skits. In the end, the audience were swayed by the proposition team of Habeebul Rahman, Nur Khairah Abdul Rahim, and Joanne Yoong, despite the gallant and persuasive arguments put forth by Mary Chong, Khairul (Khai) Mohd Khair and Umapathi Thirugnanam. The opposition even got Trump to bid their case.
This edition also honoured Adrian Tan, by naming the best speaker award after him. The first to receive this award is Nur Khairah Abdul Rahim for her outstanding performance.

Known as Thailand’s “Condom King”, Mechai Viravaidya’s audacious and innovative advocacy for family planning, HIV prevention and community activation has saved millions of lives and continues to share a brighter future.

He shared the five journeys he took to drive this innovative advocacy, and how it can be adapted in health and social care. He achieved the goals to reduce births, financial dependence, poverty and ignorance, through community activation, which was done in various ways through media campaigns, engaging the public and going into rural areas that had limited access.

In applying it in health and social care, he shared the following guiding principles:
- Be innovative
- Take no as a question
- Find reliable allies

Renowned Johns Hopkins University political scientist Prof Hahrie Han in her sharing on “Organising & Mobilising for Positive Change” shared research on how to engage people around a common cause. What have history and data taught us about the success and failure of social movements? How do we inspire and galvanise whole communities to transform?

Here are some pointers:

Why Organise?

-Organising is needed when motivation and authority to act are not aligned

-Organising is needed when people acting alone doesn’t solve the problem

-To work on the really hard problem (“wicked problems”), if you’re really hungry to make change

Why transform?

-Drawing people → making them into a community → drawing power from this community
Transformation: Build a tier of leadership, that can build momentum for the rest of the time → sustainable change.
“The way you accomplished the goals is not what you do, but how you do it .”

CHI INNOVATE 2023 kicked off with a rousing sharing by Mr Lee Poh Wah, CEO of Lien Foundation who urged everyone to ‘‘Break the rules and make your own rules!’

In his sharing titled “A Jaywalker’s Journey”, he emphasised that innovation requires bridges. But what happens before bridges are built? This is the landscape the Lien Foundation operates in when developing programmes. Mr Lee shares what it’s like to dodge the traffic of conformity, design different paths, and discover new possibilities with a jaywalker’s fortitude, agility - and idiocy.
To do this, he wants us to:

1. Look for curious people - create connections and opportunities to curious colleagues
2. Bridge relationships that are strong and flexible
3. Dangerous (intoxicated and impatient) Drivers - don’t rush and take time to see through implementation, be patient
4. Traffic complexity mgt is risk NHG
5. Value vigilance and risks - healthy relationships with risk, be courageous and creative

He ends his session with an advice - “Cross the bridge within confidence and persistence!”

Participants of CHI INNOVATE 2023 had an enriching Lunch Panel hosted by Intellect on "The Impact of Accessible Mental Health Support on Patient's Health Outcome".

Our panelists highlighted that Health is both Mental and Physical Health. Physical health is affected by mental health and vice versa and we need can better co-manage both these aspects together for better holistic care of our patients and residents.

To do this:

1. Reframe the mental model that mental health care should be done only by mental health professionals. All healthcare providers have a responsibility to have basic mental health management capability.
2. Leverage on technology to help us diagnose and monitor mental health conditions. But technology can never fully replace the human touch. We need to build a relationship with our patients to care for them holistically.
3. Encourage proactive mental health care, incentivise people to take care of both their physical and mental health
4. Relook our financing models to enable greater integration of physical and mental health care.
ome parting words from our panellists: At the end of the day, we just want the best for our patients, and that means not seeing physical and mental health as separate aspects but as holistic care for the patient.

Recognising that innovations are key to tackling the future challenges of healthcare, CHI INNOVATE celebrated seven winning projects from five healthcare institutions under the annual National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity (HIP) Awards in three award categories: Care Redesign; Automation, IT and Robotics Innovation; and Workforce Transformation.

Minister Ong Ye Kung shared pearls of wisdom in inspiring innovation. He said that we have a lot of “Proof Of Concepts” initiatives, and he urges everyone to have the discipline to look into the potential of these projects and push them towards application.

He emphasised that data sharing among health and social is important to better serve the residence needs. With the residents in mind, he said that initiatives that has been planned and implemented in the community should be easy to understand and apply, so that the community can fully benefit from it.

CHI INNOVATE 2023 started with a bang as we strived to highlight that building better capabilities for health and social care organisations and embracing digital innovations are crucial to complement Healthier SG, a national initiative by the Ministry of Health which focuses on preventive and population health.

Today marked the launch of two key initiatives – the Health and Social Change Academy and the CHI Evaluation Framework – aimed at strengthening the abilities to care for residents in the community, beyond patients in hospitals.

Signifying the collaboration and shared objectives of both the Health and Social Care sectors, Guest-of-Honour, Minister Ong Ye Kung, Singapore’s Minister for Health, led everyone in bridging both sectors together with the launch of the Health and Social Change Academy.

Together, we’re all driven to bring Singapore into the next chapter of caring for our community!

Congratulations to Prof Eugene Fidelis Soh for being awarded the title “Top Digital CEO” and Adj Asst Prof Yih Yng Ng for the title of “Change-Maker Tech Leader” at the recent SPARK Asia 200 Digital Leaders Award 2023!

As the Chairman of the CHI Co-Learning Network, Prof Soh, who is also CEO of Tan Tock Seng Hospital had established and conceptualised the network to enable co-learning and sharing beyond geographical borders and across industries. His drive to build an open learning platform, has led to valuable knowledge sharing on the latest innovative developments in technology, workforce transformation and care models. As a visionary and strategist, Prof Soh has initiated key ideas and concepts to spread, scale and sustain impactful innovation for healthcare in Singapore, such as the CHI Start-Up and Enterprise Link (CHISEL) (https://lnkd.in/gMRrNmhx ) and the CHI Learning & Development System - CHILD.

Driving Digitalisation in healthcare is Adj Asst Prof Ng, CHI’s deputy clinical director, and the director of CHI’s Digital Smart Health Office (DSHO). Prof Ng conceptualised the Digital Transformation Strategy to encourage a digital-first culture. He leads the DSHO team in their efforts to implement the Digital Transformation Strategy for TTSH, to enable the delivery of better care for the community by driving initiatives such as “Hospital Without Walls”. Prof Ng is always on the lookout for the latest in innovation, ways to increase healthcare delivery satisfaction for the patients, and creating an engaging environment for innovation at the workplace.
