Wow! What a night! On the 10th of November 2023, Klaasen Lighting Design had the honour of receiving the prestigious IES ANZ WA Award for Excellence for our work at Cape Mentelle, where we transformed the Cabernet Cellar at this historic winery in Margaret River.

Our goal was to create an inviting and warm atmosphere in the tasting room, solving glare issues and replacing outdated lighting with a customisable and easily controllable system. Thanks to the integration of Casambi controls, the adaptive lighting now offers flexibility for various events, functions and more.

Together with Sii Light, we programmed an array of stunning illuminated scenes through the Casambi controls, empowering staff to effortlessly adjust the lighting to suit any event. The judges praised the delicate balance of task and ambient light, highlighting the captivating rhythm of illumination on the barrels and the defining perimeter light, transforming a once standard barrel room into a sophisticated space.

A shout-out to our team including Martin Klaasen, Jordan Faust, and Ingmar Klaasen, as well as the support provided by Sii Light. Thank you to everyone involved for contributing to this outstanding success!

Just commissioned, March 2023
Cape Mentelle, Cabernet Tasting Hall – Margaret River, Western Australia

Cape Mentelle has a rich history as one of Margaret River’s premium wine brands. It is one of the must visit wineries in the south western region. It’s tasting hall has an iconic backdrop of wine barrels adding to the tasting experience. The original lighting however did not do justice to the experience with the lighting glary and very bland. The new lighting design by KLD was aimed at bringing back the magic and create an “instagrammable” background when tasting their wines. The lighting design initially aimed at creating a warm lighting environment, but after testing it was decided to use a more neutral 3000K light colour. The defined lighting optics now create a sparkle on the wine and glasses allowing visitors not only to taste but also appreciate the clarity and colour of the wine. As an additional feature the ceiling panels can be coloured when the hall is used for corporate functions if so desired, though the general setting is neutral white.

A nice example how a simple adaptive lighting design can transform a space into a totally different experience.
