In Singapore, during the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, our distinguished panellists shared their testimonies and perspectives:
Jean Nepo Sibomana: "In 1991, that’s when they started exercising what they had planned onto our families. We had to leave our homes and stay in a church, for about two weeks until the government forced us to come back around 1991. Since then, I can’t remember a single day when I slept in the house with my family. During the day, it was okay. You could go to school, but once you came back home, you had to sleep in the bush”.
Linda Melvern: " The UK, the UK and France from the very first adamantly refused any help at all. And extraordinary, at the end of April, on the 29th, there was an 8-hour debate in the Council about whether or not to use the word genocide in relation to Rwanda. It stands as one of the most shameful episodes, I'm afraid, in the history of the Security Council. The US in UK and France, for reasons which have never been explained properly, denied what the whole world knew was happening. This is an international failure through the UN Security Council".
Justice Jonathan Moses: "International community didn’t cover itself in glory, to put it mildly, at the time of the genocide”.
Today, in Canberra, High Commissioner Jean De Dieu Uwihanganye met with Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Tim Watts on the sidelines of a lunch hosted for African Heads of Mission.

Speaking to The Australian Newspaper on Saturday, Sibomana said genocide survivors want to see the perpetrators face justice, including those believed to be living in Australia.
Genocide survivor rallies support for Rwandans’ future Jean Nepomuscene Sibomana was only 11 years old in April 1994 when he narrowly escaped a massacre, which killed his whole family and thousands of other Tutsis, by hiding in a Catholic Church in his home town in eastern Rwanda.
