Raidho Acoustics X1.6 High End Speaker

"There is a trend in audio – even in very high-end audio – to opt for a bright, almost etched, and zingy high-frequency response. The cynical might claim this is being passed off as ‘detail.’ The highs of the Raidho Acoustics X1.6 never fall into this trap; another trait common to Raidho designs in general.

That treble is highly detailed and extended but never peaky. Joyce DiDonato’s mezzo-soprano voice [Stella Di Napoli, Erato] highlights this well; it’s powerful and articulate but never strident or bold on the X1.6… as it should be.

If the Raidho Acoustics X1.6 were just about the detail and the frequency response accuracy, that would be good enough to make it an outstanding performer. But it’s the tonality and staging of the X1.6 that sets them apart from the pack. The soundstage is a truly holographic thing; when playing a track with a simple vocal and piano in a natural environment, such as ‘Clara’ by Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzales [Room 29, DG], you get the sense of listening to the two of them in a well-appointed hotel suite, with the reverberant field extending in front, behind and to the sides of the cabinets. This also highlights that tonality, Jarvis Cocker’s distinctive baritone voice with its occasional vocal fry, is easy to get wrong, the piano is notoriously tricky to get right, and the two together are a challenge, that the X1.6 rises to well".

McIntosh has a long and distinguished history with tuners. The MR78 from the early 1970s is considered by many to be one of the best – if not the best – tuners ever made. The MR87 AM/FM Tuner continues this legacy by allowing you to enjoy the multitude of free music streaming over the airwaves.

"As I mentioned, I was thrilled when I first listened to the Audio Note UK CDT One/II with the Cobra integrated amp/DAC. The Audio Note UK sound is distinctive but, in my opinion, not truly deviant from the hi-fi “norm.” What I hear from these components is a liveliness, with plenty of energy, which can seem like a change of pace compared to some of my recent review components that focus on the lowering of the noise floor. In fact, one could make the argument that those quiet yet magnificent systems I’ve enjoyed over the last couple of years now sound like maybe they’re missing something.

The Audio Note UK sound, once again, seems to go a bit further when it comes to delivering more inner detail and more of the sonic cues that distinguish live music from reproduction. That does translate to a superb sense of decay, as well as an uncanny ability to define the boundaries of the original recording space. While listening to the CDT with the Cobra and the AN-Js, the walls of my listening room melted away and those somewhat plain-‘n’-simple AN-Js disappeared in the room".

Audio Note TT-One Deluxe Turntable

"Based on old Systemdek designs, the TT-One has plenty of old-world UK PRaT (a.k.a. Pace, Rhythm, and Timing), represented in its serious jump factor, enveloping sense of air, and extension. This table, with this particular arm and cartridge, is just as comfortable spinning old Argo and Deutsche Grammophon classical titles as it is with Savoy, Impulse!, Blue Note, and Prestige jazz LPs. It’s one of the least mechanical-sounding turntables I’ve ever heard. It flows for miles. It brings fresh insight and character from well-loved discs. Not that I still own vinyl copies of ’70s classics like Neil Young’s Harvest, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends’ On Tour With Eric Clapton, or Derek and The Dominos’ Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, but the TT-One would play those vintage rock LPs with considerable respect, tonal purity, and soundstage faithfulness with spot-on veracity, I’m sure.

The TT-One isn’t about pyrotechnics — it’s about musicality. Unlike some equally expensive, more trendy tables, it prioritizes natural rhythm and warmth over artificial bass bombs. This is a turntable for music lovers, not bass junkies. Audio Note poured decades of expertise into this machine, resulting in a sound as captivating as their higher-end offerings. Just like a complete Shindo or Luxman system, the TT-One Deluxe delivers a signature sound that’s pure Audio Note — and a pure sonic delight too, for that matter".

"Since live recordings are good for judging, Van Morrison landed on the plate first: It’s Too Late To Stop Now, recorded in 1973 in Los Angeles and London. Produced without overdubs, this disc demands quite a bit from the playback chain due to the band’s lush lineup and the live dynamics captured. On mediocre equipment, the album sounds flat, and from the diffuse, midrange-emphasized mishmash of sound, Van Morrison’s incisive organ can then only be perceived as tortured and squeezed. Black Night leaves no doubt from the beginning that this is not due to the recording. Even before the first applause, the smallest background noises give a sense of the expanse of the concert hall, perhaps an indication of a particularly “black background”. The instruments are staggered freely on the virtual stage in all dimensions in a differentiable way.

The entire sound event is reproduced organically, naturally, opulently with a lot of tension. The tonal characteristics of the instruments are reproduced clearly and cleanly, setting them apart from the other sound events. Even the electric bass, relatively freed from harmonics, remains audible even in unclear loud passages. The cymbals sound freed from any coarseness and yet dynamically assertive. It sounds as if the bassist had put on new strings, the drummer had tightened the drum heads and the cymbals had been freshly polished. Exceptionally well, these qualities can be traced on Soweto by DollarBrand/Abdullah Ibrahim. I am completely caught by the impressive beauty of this music carried by South African rhythms, at the same time I can follow every single instrument without any effort".

Coming Soon to Our Showroom: The Audio Note (UK) AN-E Limited Field Coil Loudspeaker

Field coil drive units, which use an electromagnet to create the magnetic field for the voice coil, date back to the early days of electrical music reproduction. Back then, permanent magnet technology wasn't advanced enough to make small and affordable speakers.

Soft magnetic materials, used in transformers and other devices, respond to varying fields without retaining any residual magnetism. These materials need an external polarizing source, provided by the field coil. When the current stops, the magnetic field disappears.

All moving coil drive units operate using the Lorentz Force, generated by moving electrons in the voice coil wire driven by the amplifier. The voice coil itself also generates a magnetic field that interacts with the static field and the magnet’s materials. Ideally, the force on the driver cone should be proportional to the product of the voice coil current and the static field's strength. Any deviation causes non-linearity and distortion.

Field coil drivers are superior to permanent magnet drivers because they are more transparent and detailed, with lower signal-related noise.

Audio Note TT Three Turntable

"It was fascinating how easily I fell, or rather, was prepared by the turntable to fall, under the spell of any kind of music, even if it was only “good enough.” The turntable gave me the thoroughly pleasant feeling that it was subtly leading me to the music without making itself apparent. Many other turntables tend to keep a clinical distance from the vinyl they’re playing, as if it could be dangerous to engage with previously unknown music. Such a technically distant approach makes any emotional involvement in the music difficult, and the performance comes across as somewhat inaccessible, cold, and, well, technical. Now, if that’s your kind of thing, then by all means go for it. I, on the other hand, feel much more at home with the TT Three.

It is the complete opposite of a staunch audio guardian. Along with all of the precision that you would expect the TT Three to deliver, this new Audio Note turntable always demonstrates an eagerness to present the recorded music in the best way possible. The bottom line is that it does you good — dear vinyl lovers — to groove, dance, sing along with, and enjoy the music with your head, heart, and soul. Don’t be scared, my young friends… rediscover your entire vinyl collection. I’m game! Exciting times await! After all, isn’t that the very raison d’être of music, the only truly universal language? That it speaks to you, touches you deeply, and takes you on a journey?"

"After launch of the original “ATM-1” in 1986 and
“ATM-1s” in 2006, the EL-34 push-pull amplifier” has
been updated for the first time in 18 years as “ATM-1
(2024 edition)”. While following the orthodox yet
sophisticated design of the original model and the concept
of “a tool for listening to music”, we selected the best
parts currently available and designed an amplifier that
allows the EL-34 to provide more stable performance.

The appearance of “ATM-1 2024 edition” resembles the
original ATM-1 design, but we have made modern
updates and paid attention to every details throughout.
The main chassis is a monocoque construction that

"For me, the outstanding feature of the X1t is its exceptionally high intelligibility of human voices, which establishes a special bond with the listener. This commences with the fact that the X1t carves out the characteristic features of each individual voice with captivating clarity. Let's take a listen into the opera "Carmen" (Bizet: Carmen - Herbert Von Karajan / Vienna Philharmonic - The RCA Opera Treasury 74321 39495 2): on the one hand, we have the wonderful Leontyne Price, whose dark, smoky timbre is perfectly suited to the role of the fiery Carmen, and on the other, there is Mirella Freni, who performs the role of Micaela in a crystal-clear, intense and beguiling manner. The X1t reproduces these very different voices phenomenally well.

Don't let the size fool you: The Raidho X1t is a true and superbly sounding high-end speaker. The rendering of human voices is simply stunning. The X1t is my very own recommendation".
