What is Atypical Hyperplasia?
Atypical Hyperplasia is an accumulation of abnormal cells in the breast. Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia (ADH) occurs in the ducts; Atypical Lobular Hyperplasia (ALH) occurs in the lobules.
Atypical hyperplasia is benign. However, having atypical hyperplasia increases the risk of developing breast cancer in the future.

Breast Self Examination (BSE)
Check your breasts once a month. Do breast self examination 7 to 10 days after the start of your menstruation. If you have stopped menstruating, do breast self examination on the same day of each month, e.g. first day of the month.
How to do it?
1. Look for changes in front of a mirror
2. Feel for the changes lying down
3. Look for bleeding or discharge from the ni**le

What does it mean to have dense breast?
Breast density is a measure of how much fibrous and glandular tissue there is in your breast, as compared to fat tissue.
Women with dense breasts have a higher chance of getting breast cancer. Dense breast tissue also makes it more difficult to interpret a mammogram, increasing the risk that cancer won’t be detected on a mammogram.

Dr Ong Kong Wee
Dr Ong Kong Wee runs his own practice at K W Ong Breast and General Surgery Clinic at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and Farrer Park Hospital.
His main clinical focus is on the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant breast conditions, based upon up-to-date medical evidence and techniques. His clinical interests include minimally invasive breast surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast conserving surgery and breast reconstruction for breast cancer.
He was the Founding Head of the SingHealthDuke-NUS Breast Centre from 2014 to 2018, which is the largest centre in Singapore treating the full spectrum of breast conditions. In 2018, he received a 20-year Long Service Award in recognition of his years of contribution.
In 2012, he pioneered the technique of Intra-Operative Radiotherapy in the treatment of early breast cancers. Given his expertise in minimally invasive breast biopsies such as vacuum-assisted needle biopsy and hookwire localisation, he has been a Regional Medical Consultant to Becton Dickinson since 2018.
