1. What's the trickiest part of hustling in a hawker setting for a youngster like yourself?

Juggling split-second decisions, simultaneously preparing multiple beverages and battling the morning wake-up blues.

2. What's your beverage dance in this joint?

Just recently, it’s the Chrysanthemum tea latte.

3. What’s attractive about this job?

The hours are convenient for me.

4. How has this job shaped your personality?

The role transformed me into an extroverted individual, and I’ve also picked up life wisdom from the pros in the crew. It’s quite fun to work alongside them.

Shermin hopped on board our Coffee Break crew half a year ago. With her cheerful vibe and a laid-back personality, she's always up for a good time. Oh, and did I mention she's a total travel enthusiast? If you see her at the stall, don't hold back—share your awesome travel tips with her. Let's keep the good vibes flowing!

1. What is your go-to beverage?

Iced Kopi-O-Kosong Di Loh.

2. What has been the most challenging moment for you?

One of the most challenging moments for me is when I have to throw the rubbish at the end of the day, especially when it's heavy due to a busy day. It becomes even more difficult when I start laughing uncontrollably with my coworker while trying to hoist it over the 1.1m-tall waste bin. It's quite a sight! 😳😪🥲

3. What did you do before joining Coffee Break?

Before joining Coffee Break, I worked in different areas of the service industry. I had experiences in hospitality and travel companies, where I handled customer relations and managed service operations.

4. Which role at the shop is your favorite?

Rather than settling for just one, I relish the merry-go-round of various roles. It keeps things fresh, hones my flexibility, and transforms me into a versatile maestro of all trades. It's like an unpredictable carousel of experiences.

Wei Jian, who joined our team late last year, has become a valued member of our growing CB team. Whenever we find ourselves feeling exhausted by mundane tasks, we often find solace in quoting his now-famous line, "TIRED!" This catchphrase has become a lighthearted way for us to acknowledge and relate to our shared experiences of fatigue. Here’s more information about Wei Jian.

1. Your preferred choice of beverage? My go-to drink is kopi o kosong.

2. Main challenges you face as the head barista at Coffee Break? Having to think on my feet and resolve critical situations. For instance, when we experience a short circuit in the stall, I need to quickly identify the switches in the distribution board (db box) and rectify the issue.

3. What motivated you to work at a hawker stall? There’s little pretense; the casual setting fosters a friendly atmosphere; like talking to a friend. It's heartwarming when people become regular customers, and I appreciate their loyalty to the business.

4. A behavior you wished people in general would exhibit more frequently at f&b establishments? That people could show their gratitude more often. A simple "thank you" or even a smile can make a significant difference in the experience for both the staff and the customers.

Coffee Break is a third-generation business currently run by siblings Jack, Anna, and Faye. The business began in the 1930s by the siblings’ grandfather, and was later passed down to their father, James Sai.

The siblings have since taken over the business, and have been selling traditional Kopis, Tehs, and Toasts - with a modern twist - since 1999.
