Researchers from National Dental Centre Singapore - NDCS and Duke-NUS Medical School investigated the association between sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption and periodontitis, an inflammatory destruction affecting the support structures of teeth.
SSB consumption was associated with higher odds of periodontitis. Interestingly, the association was reduced among those aware of their diabetes, suggesting reverse causality. This underscores the need for a deep understanding of chronic disease mechanisms to inform analyses and interventions. Preventive measures targeting sugar intake must consider commercial, social, political, and structural factors.

It’s World Population Health Day! oral diseases affect nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide? In addition, research has shown that at least 20 teeth are needed for good oral function, namely the ability to speak, chew and swallow food well.
A 2016 study in Singapore found that only 9% of the people aged 80 years and above have at least 20 teeth.
To encourage more people to retain as many natural teeth as possible. NDCS has rolled out the Oral Health Movement (OHM) 8020 preventive intervention programme to raise oral health awareness among those aged 40 and above, to prevent tooth loss and decline in oral function (oral frailty) as they age.
