This amazing early 20th Century sideboard is from the northwestern province of Gansu. It originally had panels that opened at the top and was used as a bin for storing grain. Our expert restorers have converted the painted panels on the front (which were once sealed) to open from the front as doors. This vintage piece features original artwork with a scholar’s motif and is available now both in store and online now!

We love styling up our rustic elm pieces with blue & white and some crisp white flowers like this lovely bunch of lilies. This one-off elm wood kitchen cabinet is an early 20th century piece from Shanxi Province. We’ve stripped it back to a bare wood finish because we simply adore the simple yet elegant feel to raw elm. These round containers were once used for storing dry goods such as rice, flour and grain. From the southern province of Yunnan, these early 20th century pieces are made from wood of coconut palms. Available both in store and online now!

We’re totally smitten with this mid 19th century black and gold lacquer cabinet from Shanxi Province. This piece would have originally been a feature cabinet in the home of a 19th century Northern Chinese home. The gold artwork has somewhat faded with age, leaving a lovely timeworn patina. Featuring original mountain landscape artwork, this piece could easily become a wonderful antique feature of any living or dining room. With its neutral and understated colour palette, this cabinet is also very easy to decorate with and around, and works in many types of interior spaces - traditional, eclectic, modern, minimalist - you name it! Upcycled furniture offers the best of both worlds: the wow factor an original vintage piece, and the vibrant splash of a fun new colour. Our Blue & White jars pair amazingly with this original 19th century cypress wood 3-drawer coffer. The blues in the porcelain complement the slightly yellow wood tones and the time-worn red-brown lacquer. Add some dried pampas grass, and you have a stunning look that you can replicate in your home with very little effort!

This early 20th century noodle cabinet from Shanxi Province, China is a real beauty. During restoration we often remove damaged lacquer and revert pieces to this sort of raw/unfinished condition. The vast majority of furniture from the rural countryside of northern China is made from Yumu (elm), an abundant species in this part of China. One of the reasons we love elm pieces so much is that they age so wonderfully, leaving stunning time worn patinas that you only see with genuine antique furniture from the region. This stunning Shanxi Side Cabinet is from the mid to late 19th Century and features all original carvings & hardware. Pieces such as these would have originally been used as the base for a family’s shrine, to worship traditional Chinese Gods, Spirts & to pay homage to ancestors.
