Last Saturday, we were thrilled to announce that both Lucas and Celine from our sommelier team have passed their Advanced Sommelier certificate together. They spent three days deep-diving into the Court of Master Sommeliers standards in beverage sales and service and have gained a clear understanding of expectations at the Advanced Sommelier Examination.

Not only that, but our Park90 Wine Director Mason Ng was also in the action last week, attending the Best Sommelier of China competition in Macau. He went there to support our Taipei sommelier team Szu Hao, and they absolutely rocked it! Our team showed what true passion and dedication look like, and it was an honour to be there supporting them.

Kamikawa Area - Asahikawa 上川町（かみかわ）

This basin region is known for its hot summers and cold winters. The resulting grapes are mineral-rich and very sweet, and many are used to make ice wine in the bitterly cold winters.

Yamazaki Winery 山﨑ワイナリー

The Yamazaki family's four generations of farming heritage led them to establish a winery in Hokkaido in 2002, motivated by innovation, high-value agriculture, and empowering local farmers. Their goal is to foster a new rural culture by bringing people together through the winery, allowing them to experience nature, savour local produce, and embrace Tappu's culture. With a 12-ha vineyard, they exclusively use grapes harvested in their fields, such as Bachhus, Kerner, Pinot Gris, and others, with the goal of crafting exceptional wines that reflect their commitment to quality produce.

The "Furano City Grape and Fruit Tree Research Institute" was founded more than 50 years ago, in the 1960s, to cultivate wine grapes in Furano due to its climate resemblance with Europe. Passionate individuals have contributed to the development of Furano Wine, which is created entirely from Furano grapes. The dedication of the institute led to the production of "Furano No.2," a unique grape variety developed through crossbreeding wild grapes with Seibel 13053, which produced wines such as "Kuri no Banshaku." The 50th anniversary of the Institute's founding was commemorated in 2022.

Shirebeshi Area 後志 (しりべし）

Home to Hirakawa, Camel Farm and Niki Hills Winery. The area around Yoichi Town and Niki Town is the most temperate in Hokkaido and is well-known for fruit cultivation, with half of Hokkaido's wineries concentrated here. It also has a lively wine tourism industry.

Hirakawa Winery 平川ワイナリ

Founded in 2015, Hirakawa Winery is located in Yoichi on the Japan’s Sea coastline on Hokkaido island. The 5-hectare vineyard features a beautiful hill on south exposure followed by a mix between mild humidity sea climate and fresh dry mountain climate. These lands have hosted delicious fruits for more than 60 years, affirming therefore the expected quality for the future. Most of the growing surface is dedicated to white grape varieties such as Kerner, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.

Camel Farm Winery キャメルファームワイナリー

Located in Yoichi, Hokkaido, aims to produce world-class wine using traditional Italian technology and Guyot-style vineyards that have been tended to since the 1980s. Blessed with a warm climate and a well-ventilated environment, Yoichi’s unique terroir is reflected in the balanced acidity of their wines. With vineyards overlooking the Sea of Japan and a variety of grape cultivation, including the German Kerner and white Bacchus, Camel Farm Winery produces a range of white and sparkling wines that have the potential for good depth and complexity.

Niki Hills ニキヒルズワイナリー

Founded in 2014, NIKI Hills Winery aims to rejuvenate Niki-cho, a semi-marginal village, by reclaiming abandoned farmland. With a 33ha site boasting a vineyard, brewery, restaurant, and accommodation, it contributes to local employment and tourism. The Niki/Yoichi region's optimal drainage and temperature variations foster high-sugar grapes for quality wines. The winery seeks to elevate Niki-cho's status as a wine haven, intertwining agriculture and regional advancement while upholding the area's 130-year history of fruit cultivation.

Theme of the Month: Wines of Hokkaidō 🇯🇵

Japanese wine is gaining more and more attention as the local wine industry begins to grow and expand. New wineries are emerging throughout Japan, producing high-quality reds, whites, roses, and sparkling wines. The use of European grape varieties in Japan has led to an improvement in the quality of local
wine. Now Japanese wines are starting to receive recognition and awards at international competitions.

The number of wineries in Japan has skyrocketed to around 400 over the past decade. Ingenuity and hard work have helped overcome climate handicaps like high rainfall and humidity, leading to high quality wines born of Japanese attention to detail.

Over the next couple of weeks, Park90 is honoured to introduce to you five vignerons—farmers who grow grapes
for wine—from one of Japan’s booming wine regions---Hokkaidō.
