Louise Hill Design
www.louise-hill-design.com My love of design and creativity comes from growing up in a family full of designers! I like to create very detailed, colourful images.
I am blessed to have been surrounded by beautiful textiles and creative conceptual artwork all my life. After graduating from art school in London, I specialised in high end packaging design for over 15 years working for clients such as Crabtree & Evelyn, Fortnum & Mason’s and Marks & Spencers. I developed a love for colour, typography, illustration and detailed artwork which I have now put to use

“Each area a little different to the next, from the traditional Clan Houses and elegant shophouses of Bukit Pasoh to the more gritty urban feel of Joo Chiat, this print is a celebration of the melting pot of businesses and people who occupy these heritage buildings.
The Singapore shophouse remains a very special shopping experience for locals and tourists alike.
Lanterns swing from windows and a community banner for the Hungry Ghost Festival drapes across a doorway bringing news of fun festivities. To add more layers of detail, I have sprinkled my print with other imagery I adore such as the little embroidered clouds and exotic birds in the sky taken from some vintage fabric, the iconic Singaporean Rose Brand Syrup which has beautifully bright packaging and the pretty Bourgainvillia which you find everywhere across the island.“
Adding antique gold foil to an order today which will be jetting off to Melbourne! I loved Melbourne when I lived there in 2000 to 2003 so I’m really pleased every time some of my artwork makes it back there.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...
For this design I have been very much influenced by the beautiful blues and green colours often found in traditional Asian tea sets, silk brocade fabrics, old jade paintbrushes, temple roof tiles to name a few!
Continuing on from the generic Asia theme of my Chinoiserie in Gold & Blush Pinks and Chinoiserie in Aquamarines & Powder Blues I have included imagery from mainly China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
I spend many months collecting vintage objects and fabrics for my prints and many hours rummaging in markets, second hand shops and scrolling through pages on the internet to find little treasures to include in my artworks.
I like to weave my imagery into intricate layers, creating a kind of luxurious pattern which is contained within a traditional Chinese Lattice window frame. The lattice frame for this design has an intricate electric blue brocade silk as it’s background pattern.
I enjoy photographing little ‘vignettes’ of vintage found objects that complement each other and mix these with embroideries and architectural details of places that I have lived in or travelled to.
I especially like the little ‘White Rabbit’ tin box from the milk and vanilla flavoured traditional sweets that originated from Shanghai, where I used to live many years ago - my twin boys used to get given these little sweets from well meaning Shanghainese ‘Aunties’ and neighbours!
Beautiful signage spotted on my walk around my neighbourhood ❤️ I love the colours in the blue gates too

My ‘Asia Series’ family of fine art prints are very versatile as they come in many sizes.
They can be printed as a contemporary ‘stretched canvas’ with an inner wooden frame or a more traditional framed etching paper.
Printed in vibrant archival non-fade inks, my work is created to a very high standard and captures all of the intricate fine details which make up my multilayered designs.

‘We Love Singapore’ and ‘We Love Hong Kong’
are always a popular choice of ‘leaving gift’ or memento to bring with you at this time of year as many expats wave goodbye to countries they have lived in and called home for many years.
Having lived as an expat in both of these fantastic places, I designed these artworks as ‘postcards’ that feature lighthearted iconic symbolism of each place, including many aspects of day to day life and culture that evoke fond memories for us all.
These artworks and any other pieces from my Asia Series can also be customised to include images of friends and family nestled in between buildings or sitting on trams.. so much fun!

After my ‘Singapore Shophouses in Heritage Blues’ Ltd Edition piece SOLD OUT, I had quite a few requests asking if I would print more but as a limited edition piece this would be unfair to those who had already collected it.
As a result I decided to create a new piece in the same style but with a different colour palette and a slightly smaller size.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...
They say that eyes are a window into your soul. Well in Singapore, if you want to gain an insight into the authentic lives of its occupants, it’s their gates and doorways which will lead you into another magical world. It might be an entrance to a temple, a restaurant, a little Kopi coffee shop, but the explorer can only revel in the magic by going off the main routes. These slightly ‘grittier’ streets and the secret labyrinths of back alleys are an edgier more traditional side of Singapore that I love and are the inspiration behind this print.

‘Singapore Streets Neon Pop’
Limited Edition Hand Finished Fine Art Print
28 canvas & 28 etching paper pieces
My artwork is finished and ready to ship to Melbourne, ironically one of my favourite cities I have been lucky enough to live in.
This design brings together all of the little everyday subliminal objects we live with in Singapore, from vintage ride on toys, vending machines, neon signs that light up in applied metallic foils, beautiful flowers of Little India, iconic shophouses, local food and drink labels to stacks of brightly coloured plastic tubs and brushes, all in glorious technicolor that represent this vibrant city!
There are so many cultural sights, local cuisines and colours that remind us of places we have lived and I think this design captures parts of Singapore in a fun playful way and makes for a great momento of our ‘Little Red Dot’.

Stunning tea caddies originating from China, part of my collection at my studio.
The first half of my design career was spent as a high end packaging designer in London, designing for companies like Crabtree & Evelyn, Fortnum & Masons, Highgrove and Whittards Coffee where I fell in love with mixing heritage roots with modern branding.
As a lot of this time in design agencies was ‘pre-computer’ much time was spent on hand crafting, working with talented typographers and illustrators, these days I love to mix new technology with old, creating my work through photography and hand finishing with little painted or gold foil details.

STORY BEHIND THE DESIGN
As a family we have been lucky enough to live in a beautiful heritage shophouse one of the most famous tourist hotspots on Koon Seng Road.
Whilst living there and inspired by the traditional Peranakan area of Joo Chiat, I created this artwork.
My ‘Singapore Shophouse’ print was created as a fun and vibrant representation of the famous and much cherished heritage shophouses dotted around the city.
I incorporated the traditional Peranakan colour palette into this design with the use of various vintage detailed embroidered fabrics, tiles, tea flasks and tiffin carriers that I have collected over time and photographed.
Can you see the ‘glass beaded bird’? I found him as a detail on an old Peranakan ladies purse whilst hunting for props alongside the pretty pink and gold hand painted bowl nestled amongst the tiles at the bottom of the print.
