On Sunday (08.09.2024) the Paris 2024 Paralympics finished. 64000 spectators came to see the closing ceremony of the games. Most successful nation at the games was PR of China with 220 medals, second was Great Britain with 124 medals and USA was third with 105 medals. Slovenia got two medals. One gold - Franc Tiršek in individual para-shooting competition, and one bronze - Dejan Fabčič and Živa Lavrinc in para-archery doubles competition (they were also the flag-bearers at the closing ceremony). Congratulations to all the para-athletes who competed at the games, we will see you next time in four years in Los Angeles.

Day On The Beach 2024:
A Celebration of Inclusion and Accessibility
On July 13, 2024, the vibrant shores of Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz, CA, came alive with joy and excitement as Shared Adventures hosted its annual Day On The Beach event. This cherished tradition, now a cornerstone of Santa Cruz’s community calendar, has been making waves in the disability community since its inception.

In EU there are cca 15 percent of people with different kind of disabilities. In Slovenia that number is between 12 and 13 percent. Many of them are wheelchair users or need special widgets for mobility. Society "My Path" Društvo Moja pot from Hrastnik organized a special event called "Mobility without limits" where they showed several widgets and gadgets for the public. Our partner firm Zavod Brez ovir also took part in the festivities.

Type of vacations called "coolcations" are getting more and more popular in Europe. And it seems also Slovenian Alpine lakes are on the list of possible coolcations destinations!

Yesterday evening (28.08.2024) a grand opening of the Paris Paralympics 2024 took place. Until 8th of September more than 4400 sportsmen from 167 countries will be competing in dozens of different individual and team sporting competitions.
Slovenia is represented by 14 athletes: Para-Archer Živa Lavrinc (1st Paralympics), her sporting team mate Dejan Fabčič, para-shooter Franc Tiršek and disc thrower Henrik Plank (all three men are competing at their 4th Paralympics). Slovenia is also represented by ladies sitting volleyball team. This will be already their fourth appearance at Paralympic games.
Organizers said they already sold more than 2 million tickets for the sporting competitions, while about half million are still available. Paris has invested 125 million euros for the improvement of accessibility for the disabled for the games, although only 10 million have been allocated for the needs and facilities of the disabled sportsmen.

Beautiful Slovenian town Kamnik in the summer. City is located in the vicinity of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

International project united Slovenia and Italy in the region of Kras (Karst) where several organizations together inspected the accessibility (for wheelchair users and people with hearing and visual impairments) of 34 tourist locations in two countries in this border area. We are proud to announce that our partner firm Brez ovir also took part in this noble project. The hugest marks went to the Lipica Stables and UNESCO protected Škocjan caves where wheelchair users can enjoy a special 4D tour of these beauties. Both locations can of course be visited with our help.

We have already been reporting about the "conquests" of the hills and the mountains by the disabled in Slovenia! But this time we have to inform you that a group of 11 disabled (wheelchair users, people with hearing or visual impairments) with the help of their assistants and the special mountain guides have conquered the mountain Breithorn (4164m). Peak is located in the Swiss Alps, near the border with Italy! Congratulations to everyone who took part in this endeavor!

Today in Slovenia we are observing a National holiday called Assumption day or Assumption of Mary (in Slovenian language Marijino vnebovzetje). It is a national holiday and a free day from work since 1992 (after the independence). Most of people will take Friday (tomorrow) off and will have four free days and prolonged weekend to enjoy free time and go somewhere for a short holidays.

Postojna Cave: Discover an enchanting underworld in the heart of Slovenia

Last week capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo hostel European Championships of B division in men's wheelchair basketball. Nine team participated - hosts BIH, Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece and Czech Republic. Sadly Slovenia was drawn in the group with 5 teams, which of course brought more games and a very hectic schedule. Also their group had much tougher opponents than those who were in the other group. In the group stage Slovenia lost against hosts BIH and Switzerland and defeated Portugal and Croatia. That eventually was enough only for the 5th place match in which Slovenia easily defeated Greece. Switzerland won the tournament by defeating hosts BIH in the finals (both teams qualified now to the A division of wheelchair basketball). Bronze medal went to Latvia.
Solid result by Slovenia, but a bit unlucky with the draw which means they are staying in the B division of wheelchair basketball.
Final Standings: Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Greece...
