HLT Digital Bratislava Conference: Teaching for Tomorrow, Bratislava, Slovakia was a two day conference for English teachers.

HLT – Humanism in Language Teaching, is what we believe in when it comes to teaching languages. At the HLT.digital conference, were presented HLT practitioners who have introduced humanistic approaches to the classroom and helped to reshape the learning process with the student at the centre.

“… acknowledging them as people, and not seeing them as language learning machines. … Everything that the teacher does together with the learners should be informed by that awareness of learners as people. … Creating space for learners to express their ideas, their thoughts, their feelings, their opinions. Giving them room, even from quite elementary levels, to bring themselves into the picture. Not simply to be performing mechanically tasks or exercises or activities.”

We couldn’t agree more with what Alan Pulverness said about HLT.

The emotions need to settle down first. Our conference lasted only two days, but the intensity of the energy flowing there was massive. We will definitely share more about our learnings later on.

WRITING REAL THINGS IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

When Herbert Kohl had to teach 10 year old Puerto Rican children in New York to write in English he tried every trick he knew. The kids saw no point in writing in any language so the tricks fell flat. He then started writing individuals personal letters. In each letter he had to tell the child something new about himself - in the reply the child had to do the same.

It is hard to think of a more normal and straight forward way of getting writing going in a FL classroom. I have been writing to my students for the past five years and I find that it really forces me to properly notice them as separate individuals. The text that most of the students who want to correspond produce is exciting to read because it deals with real, felt things. There is the affective depth that the student and I feel is right for us, and this varies enormously from correspondence to correspondence.
Here is an example of one of the last letters from an Italian girl who had been in my class in UK for six weeks. The correspondence with her was relatively affectively strong:

"English to me are quite cold in general. Even though they are very kind in some cases their kindness is not genuine most of the times. But this is if you stopped at the appearance. If you look deeper many of them are good. Maybe I am wrong, but while I am writing I am sitting on my bed and from time to time I can look at the little Christmas tree my English family (I want to consider them so) put in my bedroom. I was going to cry when I found it this afternoon. It has been a wonderful thought. Even, I think that my "family" would look cold to a person that does not know them, it's just that English people to me love very much their privacy ...."

A note of warning: if you decide to write letters to your students you have to fix boundaries. You need to budget how much time you will spend on it and you need to be sure that you want to cope with the things people in secondary classes have to say.
