After working on for over two decades, scientists and engineers at the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the US have completed the LSST Camera. This is the world's largest digital camera and was once mounted on Vera C. Observatory's Simonyi Survey Telescope. This 3200MP camera will help researchers observe the Universe in extreme detail.
This largest digital camera ever constructed for astronomy is roughly the size of a small car and weighs around 3000 kilograms. It has a front lens that is over 1.5 metres across β the largest lens ever made for this purpose.
There is another lens that is 90 centimetres (3 feet) wide and it is specially designed to seal the vacuum chamber that houses the camera's enormous huge focal plane. That focal plane is made up of 201 individual custom-designed CCD sensors, "and it is so flat that its surface varies by no more than a tenth of the width of a human hair. The pixels themselves are only 0.01 mm (10 microns) wide."
The LSST Camera will generate an enormous trove of data on the southern night sky that researchers will gather for new insights into dark energy, dark matter, the changing night sky, the Milky Way galaxy and our Solar System.
Tens of thousands of people in England with type 1 diabetes will soon receive an 'artificial pancreas' through the NHS, a global first. The device continuously monitors blood glucose levels and adjusts insulin delivery automatically via a pump.
Local NHS systems will begin identifying eligible individuals who may benefit from the Hybrid Closed Loop system, also known as an artificial pancreas. There are currently 269,095 people with type 1 diabetes in England.
Some individuals with type 1 diabetes may no longer need insulin injections, relying instead on this technology for medication. This can prevent life-threatening hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes, potentially saving lives.
NHS England has allocated Β£2.5 million to local health systems for identifying eligible patients. The nationwide distribution of the artificial pancreas follows a successful pilot program involving 835 individuals with type 1 diabetes.
The NHS in England spends approximately Β£10 billion annually, around 10% of its budget, on diabetes identification and treatment.

The discovery made in 2014 has gone viral on social media and says there is a huge reservoir of water 700 kms beneath the surface of the earth.
Scientists from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, have found a huge underground water source around 700 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface.
The findings have been presented in detail in a 2014 scientific paper titled 'Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle'. It also presented the unique properties of ringwoodite. This subterranean reservoir is three times the volume of all the planet's surface oceans combined.
The finding challenges the notion of water solely originating from external sources, suggesting Earthβs water may have emerged from within.
βItβs good evidence that the Earthβs water came from within,β Steven Jacobsen of the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois told New Scientist back in 2014.
Researchers have discovered that the danger poses to Africa's great apes has been greatly underestimated, putting them at risk from mining activities.
This study was conducted by the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), in partnership with the conservation organization Re:wild.
Scientists stated that the study's goal was to assess the risk mining poses to Africa's ape population, comprising 180,000 gorillas, bonobos, and chimpanzees, which accounts for more than one-third of their global population. These animals are currently in danger of becoming endangered.
The study pointed out that because mining companies are not required to share biodiversity data with the public, the actual impact of mining on biodiversity, especially on great apes, could be even greater.
The growing need for essential minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and other rare earth elements required for the shift towards cleaner energy sources is driving a rise in mining across the continent. It's noted that Africa still holds a significant portion of these resources untapped.
As a result, vital tropical rainforests are being cut down, causing habitat loss and putting more pressure on hunting. Moreover, there's a greater risk of disease transmission, ultimately threatening the survival of apes.
The study covered 17 African countries where both apes and mining are common.
Researchers analyzed data from active and planned mining sites to establish buffer zones of 10 km, considering both direct and indirect impacts, with larger buffer zones of 50 km around habitats of great apes.

China is on track to have the biggest air force globally, potentially overtaking the United States, according to a top US military leader. Navy Adm. John Aquilino, who heads the US Indo-Pacific Command, sees China's military advancement as the most significant threat since World War II.
βWhat we all have to understand is we havenβt faced a threat like this since World War 2. The largest military, and again as Senator Wicker said, the worldβs largest Navy, soon to be the worldβs largest Air Force. So, the magnitude, scope and scale of this security challenge cannot be understated,β Aquilion said in a testimony on Capitol Hill on March 21.
βCombined, the PLA Air Force (PLAAF) and PLAN Aviation constitute the largest aviation force in the Indo Pacific. Over half of the PLAβs operational fighter force is 4th and 5th generation, enabling longer-range A2/AD and counter-air operations across the western Pacific Ocean. The PLA is also developing a stealth bomber that can cover the Second Island Chain and the Western Pacific,β he wrote in a March 18 statement.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently acquired a building situated near the Gaddafi Stadium to alleviate accommodation challenges faced by both national and international players.
Reports indicate that the board has invested Rs4 billion in procuring the multi-storey building. Given its initial purpose as an apartment complex, the conversion process into a hotel will be necessary.
Construction on the building commenced several years ago under a separate developer but was halted due to security concerns raised by the PCB. Despite initial bookings by individuals, legal complexities prompted the builder to offer the property to the PCB for purchase.
This strategic move is anticipated to not only mitigate accommodation issues for players but also alleviate the financial strain on the board, which currently expends significant funds on lodging arrangements in private hotels in Lahore.
Moreover, the establishment of this hotel will contribute to the community by minimizing disruptions caused by road closures during team movements.
NASA is embarking on a groundbreaking project to grow plants on the Moon as part of its 2026 Artemis III mission. Astronauts will set up growth chambers containing various plant species, including duckweed and thale cress, chosen for their adaptability to lunar conditions and potential as sustainable food sources.
The data collected from this initiative will help scientists understand the use of lunar-grown plants for human nutrition and life support, both on the Moon and beyond.
Among the selected plant candidates, duckweed stands out for its resilience and rapid growth, providing significant amounts of oxygen and protein despite its small size and lack of traditional plant structures. Thale cress, having previously thrived in Moon soil collected during Apollo missions, demonstrates its ability to adapt to harsh lunar environments
Additionally, NASA plans to introduce red and green varieties of Brassica rapa, known as Wisconsin fast plants, renowned for their swift life cycle, to gain further insights into plant growth and adaptation in space conditions.

A study from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management suggests that Scandinavia likely originated from Greenland. According to the scientists, the landmass forming the basis of Denmark and Scandinavia likely emerged from Greenland around 3.75 billion years ago.
Scientists used isotopic compositions of lead, hafnium, and oxygen to track chemical evidence from the Fennoscandian Shield to Greenland. This method helped researchers establish the age and source of Scandinavian bedrock.
βOur data suggest that the oldest part of Earthβs crust beneath Scandinavia originates in Greenland and is about 250 million years older than we previously thought,β said Professor Tod Waight, a geologist at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management.
Scientists discovered the oldest part of Earth's crust beneath Scandinavia, tracing its sediments back to Greenland.
