Some confusing words and their meanings

Some words look the same, while others sound the same. Knowing the difference between these similar words can be very tricky. In this document we have provided some of the most commonly confused word pairs, with definitions for each and sentences showing them in context. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it should hopefully help you begin to recognize the particular differences between different words.

Students at a beginner English level have a foundation of basic English grammar and vocabulary. With your understanding of basic English, you are on your way to building your vocabulary and expanding your comprehension of simple, daily topics.

In many languages, adjectives denoting attributes usually occur in a specific order. Generally, the adjective order in English is:
Quantity or number
Quality or opinion
Size
Age
Shape
Color
Proper adjective (often nationality, other place of origin, or material)

Most Conjunction in English in English are short, but they hold a significant place in designing English sentences. Sometimes, we do not even notice this tiny conjunction in sentences but they are everywhere in English writings. Ignoring these conjunctions can lead to several English mistakes that make writing pieces full of errors.

Despite being tiny, no one can ignore the importance of conjunction in English. They are some of the most important words in English. They play a very crucial role in designing the sentences that we speak and write a daily basis.

A conjunction, like a noun, verb, or pronoun, is a part of speech. A conjunction’s primary function is to join together other parts of speech.

Some grammarians consider that strictly-speaking there are only two English tenses. Others argue six or other quantities. For the sake of simplicity, Learners of English as a Foreign or Second Language are usually taught that - taking into account aspect and future modals - there are 12 tenses in English.

What is a dam?
A dam is defined as a barrier or structure across a stream, river or waterway to confine and then control the flow of water. Dams vary in size from small earth embankments, often for farm use, to high massive concrete structures generally used for water supply, hydropower and irrigation.

Dams and reservoirs are essential structures that are critical for providing us with some of our basic needs. Dams are structures built to retain water by forming a reservoir behind the structure. These are usually built across, or near, naturally flowing water to manage the water for human use.

How old are Dams?
Simple earth dams and networks of canals were constructed as far back as 2000 BC. The Romans built an elaborate system of low dams for water supply. The most famous was the Cornalbo earth dam in southern Spain which had a height of 24 meters (78 feet) and a length of 185 meters (606 feet).

The building of the Marib dam in Yemen began around 750 BC and took 100 years to complete. It consisted of an earth embankment 4 meters in height and stone sluices to regulate discharges for irrigation and domestic use. In 1986, the existing dam was raised to 38 meters that created a reservoir of 398 Mm3.
The Sayamaike dam, one of the oldest dams in Japan, was built in the early 7th century and after several modifications and a heightening is still in use today.

In the UK the oldest dam is purportedly Castle Pond, Pembroke, which was given by King John in 1199 to the Knights Templar of St. John of Jerusalem.
