🧖🏼‍♂️Elderly Skin Care .🧖🏽‍♀️

When we age, our bodies undergo several biological changes. These changes affect how our bodies work and react. One change we may notice is that your Skin now looks nothing like before. As we enter into our Senior years, adopting a Skin Care Routine is Essential.

The first thing you need to do is educate yourself about Senior Skin Care. Aging Skin is more sensitive and susceptible to a lot of Skin Diseases and conditions. The Skin becomes thinner and naturally dryer, making it much easier to damage and dry out. When this does happen, it takes much longer to heal.

This means that Senior Skin is more prone to Irritation, Scaling, and Infection. Without a proper Skin Care Routine, one may just end up with a variety of problems. While everyone’s skin is different, there are some conditions that we should be aware of. Visiting your Healthcare Professional should definitely be your main priority if you should encounter such Skin issues.

👂🏾Types of Hearing Loss.👂🏾

There are three (3) main types of Hearing Loss:

1) Sensorineural Hearing Loss is the most common type of Hearing Loss, however it is permanent and causes damage to the tiny hair-like cells in the inner ear or the Auditory Nerve.

The Auditory Nerve carries important information about the Loudness, Pitch and meaning of sounds to the brain. Most adults with Hearing Loss have a Sensorineural Loss.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss can often result in difficulty understanding Sound or Speech even though it is loud enough to hear.

2) Conductive Hearing Loss is caused by a mechanical problem in the outer or middle ear or an obstruction in the ear canal, such as Earwax, that blocks sound from getting to the eardrum. It can be permanent, but more often it is temporary and can be medically treated.

3) Mixed Hearing Loss is when a person has both Sensorineural and Conductive Hearing Loss.

👨🏾‍🦳Massage Therapy for Seniors👵🏼

As we grow older, our bodies can start slowing down as we begin experiencing some of the pain and stiffness that comes with aging.

Massage Therapy for seniors can be an effective, non-invasive way to help alleviate some of the symptoms of many age-related conditions, especially when used to compliment traditional medical services. With regular massage, seniors can experience an improved quality of life, increased energy levels and feel younger and healthier overall.

Massage Therapy also offers numerous benefits to the entire body. It helps ease joint and muscle pain, and can even reduce the increased levels of stress that tend to come with aging.

The massage techniques utilized for seniors include lighter, gentle stroking and kneading as well as application of pressure to specific points on the body. Even the most gentle massage has proven effects on the nervous system and blood circulation, two of the most vulnerable systems of the body that feel the effects of aging.

Massage Benefits for Seniors:

•Alleviating Depression.
•Physical and Mental Relaxation.
•Better Sleeping Habits.
•Quicker Healing Process from Injuries or Illnesses.

👀Glaucoma Treatment.👀

Untreated Glaucoma can lead to faster development of permanent Vision Loss or Blindness. Treatments can slow down additional Vision Loss, but they can’t restore Lost Vision. It’s important to see your Eye doctor right away if you have Eye pain, severe headaches or Vision problems.

Glaucoma treatments may include:

•Eyedrops/Medication:

Prescription eyedrops decrease fluids and increase drainage to alleviate Eye pressure. There are many types of eyedrop medications that can be used for this condition. Because Glaucoma is a lifelong condition, you may need to use daily eyedrops for life.

•Laser treatment:

Your Eye doctor uses a laser (strong beam of light) to help improve fluid drainage from your Eye. While the laser can complement the use of Eye drops, it may not replace it completely. The results from laser treatments vary, but can last up to five years. Some laser treatments can also be repeated.

•Surgery:

Surgery is another way to help reduce Eye pressure. It is more invasive but can also achieve better Eye pressure control faster than drops or laser. Surgery can help slow down Vision Loss, but it can’t restore lost Vision or cure Glaucoma. There are many types of surgeries for Glaucoma, and depending on the specific type and severity, your Eye doctor may choose one over another.

👀 Types of Glaucoma👀

There are several types of Glaucoma, including:

•Open-angle:
This type is the most common. It occurs when tiny deposits build up in the Eye’s drainage canals, slowly clogging them. The canals appear to be open and functioning normally. But over months or years, the deposits cause fluid to build up and put pressure on the Optic Nerve. The disease can go unnoticed for years because most people don’t have symptoms.

•Closed-angle:
Also called Angle-closure or Narrow Angle Glaucoma, this rare type often comes on suddenly (acute). It occurs when the Angle between the Iris (the colored part of the Eye that controls light exposure) and Cornea (clear outer part of the Eye) is too narrow. As a result, the drainage canals become blocked, preventing aqueous fluid from leaving the Eye and causing an acute elevation in Eye pressure. Symptoms, including Eye pain and headaches, can be severe and require immediate medical attention.

•Normal-Tension:
As many as one in three people have Optic Nerve damage even when Eye pressure is normal or not very high. It’s also called Normal-Pressure or Low-Tension Glaucoma.

•Congenital:
Some babies are born with drainage canals that don’t form properly in the womb. Your healthcare provider might notice a baby’s Glaucoma symptoms at birth. Or signs may become noticeable during childhood. This condition is also known as Childhood Infantile or Pediatric Glaucoma.

👀Symptoms of Glaucoma👀

Signs of Open-angle Glaucoma tend to come on subtlety and gradually. That makes them easy to miss. Many people with Open-angle Glaucoma have no noticeable symptoms early on, which makes it incredibly important to have routine Eye exams to detect this disease in its earlier stages.

Glaucoma damage is irreversible. Early detection and treatment is crucial to prevent blindness.

However, Closed-angle Glaucoma has more severe symptoms that tend to come on suddenly.

With any type, you may experience:

•Eye pain or pressure.
•Headaches.
•Rainbow-colored halos around lights.
•Low Vision- blurred vision, narrowed vision (tunnel vision) or blind spots.
•Nausea and vomiting.
•Red eyes.

📑👀Causes of Glaucoma📑👀

Glaucoma can occur without any cause, but is affected by many factors. The most important of which is the Intraocular Eye Pressure. Your Eyes produce a fluid called Aqueous Humor that nourishes them.

This liquid flows through the pupil to the front of the Eye. In a healthy Eye, the fluid leaves through a drainage canal located between the Iris and Corneau.

With Glaucoma, the drainage canals become clogged with Microscopic deposits. The fluid has nowhere to go, so it builds up in the Eye. This excess fluid puts pressure on the Eye. Eventually, this elevated Eye pressure can damage the Optic Nerve leading to Glaucoma.

Here are (4) causes of Glaucoma:

•Dilating Eyes.
•Blocked or restricted drainage in your Eye.
•Poor or reduced blood flow to your Optic Nerve.
•High or elevated blood pressure.

🔬👀Diagnosing Glaucoma🔬👀

It’s possible to have Glaucoma and not know it. Regular eye exams are important to catch Glaucoma or other eye problems. Eye exams can assess Optic Health and Vision Loss.

To check for Glaucoma, your Eye doctor may do one or more of these painless tests for results:

•Dilated Eye Test: To widen pupils and view the Optic Nerve at the back of the eyes.

•Gonioscopy Test: To examine the angle where the iris and cornea meet.

•Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Test: To look for changes in the Optic Nerve that may indicate Glaucoma.

•Ocular Pressure Test (Tonometry): To measure Eye pressure.

•Pachymetry Test: To measure corneal thickness.

•Slit-lamp Test: To examine the inside of the Eye with a special microscope called a Slit Lamp.

•Visual Acuity Test (Eye Charts): To check for Vision Loss.

•Visual Field Test (Perimetry): To check for changes in Peripheral Vision (your ability to see things off to the side).

👀Glaucoma 👀

•Glaucoma is a general term used to describe a group of Eye disorders that damage the Optic Nerve. It's the most common form of Optic Nerve damage leading to Vision Loss. In most cases, fluid builds up in the front part of the eye. This extra fluid puts pressure on the Eye, gradually damaging the Optic Vision. This pressure is known as Intraocular Pressure (IOP), or Eye pressure.

•Persons with normal Eye pressure can still get Glaucoma. Untreated or poorly controlled Glaucoma can lead to permanent and irreversible Vision Loss and blindness. Glaucoma is a common age-related Eye problem that affects many persons.

•Most people develop Glaucoma in both Eyes, although, the disease initially may be worse in one Eye. With Open-angle Glaucoma, one Eye may have moderate or severe damage, while the other Eye may be mildly affected. Over time, the disease damages both Eyes.

•Persons with closed-angle Glaucoma in one Eye have a 40% to 80% chance of developing the same type of Glaucoma in the other Eye within 5 to 10 years.

🧘🏾‍♂️Stroke Recovery🧘🏾‍♀️

There are many approaches to Stroke Rehabilitation. Your Rehabilitation plan will depend on the part of the body or type of ability affected by your Stroke.

The sooner you begin Stroke Rehabilitation, the more likely you are to regain lost abilities and skills. It's common for Stroke Rehabilitation to start as soon as 24 to 48 hours after your Stroke, while you're in the hospital.

The duration of your Stroke Rehabilitation depends on the severity of your Stroke and related complications. Some Stroke survivors recover quickly. But most need some form of long-term Stroke Rehabilitation, lasting possibly months or years after their Stroke.

Your Stroke Rehabilitation plan will change during your recovery as you relearn the skills and your needs change. With ongoing practice, you can continue to make gains over time.

Here are a few helpful tips to help improve with your Stroke Rehabilitation Journey:

•Motor-skill Exercises.
These exercises can help improve your muscle strength and coordination. You might have therapy to strengthen your swallowing.

•Range-of-motion Therapy.
Certain exercises and treatments can ease muscle tension (spasticity) and help you regain range of motion.

•Therapy for Cognitive Disorders.
Occupational therapy and speech therapy can help you with lost cognitive abilities, such as memory, processing, problem-solving, social skills, judgment and safety awareness.

•Mobility Training.
You might learn to use mobility aids, such as a walker, canes, wheelchair or ankle brace. The ankle brace can stabilize and strengthen your ankle to help support your body's weight while you relearn to walk.

Stroke Prevention.

Knowing your Stroke risk factors, following your doctor's recommendations and adopting a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take to prevent a stroke.

If you've had a Stroke or a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), these measures might help prevent another Stroke. The follow-up care you receive in the hospital and afterward also may play a role.

Many Stroke Prevention strategies are the same as strategies to prevent heart disease. In general, healthy lifestyle recommendations.

Here are 5 ways to help Prevent Strokes

•High blood pressure (hypertension).

This is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your stroke risk. If you've had a stroke, lowering your blood pressure can help prevent a subsequent TIA or Stroke. Healthy lifestyle changes and medications are often used to treat high blood pressure.

•Managing diabetes.

Diet, exercise and losing weight can help you keep your blood sugar in a healthy range. Your doctor may prescribe diabetes medication.

•Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

A diet containing five or more daily servings of fruits or vegetables may reduce your risk of Stroke.

•Exercising regularly.

Aerobic exercise reduces your risk of Stroke in many ways. Exercise can lower your blood pressure, increase your levels of good cholesterol, and improve the overall health of your blood vessels and heart.

•Drinking alcohol in moderation.

Heavy alcohol consumption increases your risk of high blood pressure, Ischemic Strokes and Hemorrhagic Strokes. Alcohol may also interact with other drugs you're taking. However, drinking small to moderate amounts of alcohol, such as one drink a day, may help prevent Ischemic Stroke and decrease your blood's clotting tendency. Talk to your doctor about what's appropriate for you.

Stroke Complications.

A Stroke can sometimes cause temporary or permanent disabilities, depending on how long the brain lacks blood flow and which part was affected. Complications may include:

•Paralysis or loss of muscle movement: You may become paralyzed on one side of your body, or lose control of certain muscles, such as those on one side of your face or one arm.

•Difficulty talking or swallowing: A Stroke might affect control of the muscles in your mouth and throat, making it difficult for you to talk clearly, swallow or eat. You also may have difficulty with language, including speaking or understanding speech, reading, or writing.

•Memory loss or thinking difficulties: Many people who have had Strokes experience some memory loss. Others may have difficulty thinking, reasoning, making judgments and understanding concepts.

•Emotional problems: People who have had Strokes may have more difficulty controlling their emotions, or they may develop depression.

•Pain: Pain, numbness or other unusual sensations may occur in the parts of the body affected by Stroke. For example, if a Stroke causes you to lose feeling in your left arm, you may develop an uncomfortable tingling sensation in that arm.

•Changes in behavior and self-care ability: People who have had Strokes may become more withdrawn. They may need help with grooming and daily chores.
