One of my favorite milestones was moving my kids from their crib to a bed. No, I'm not being sarcastic. I loved this time for them and watching them grow into big kids in a big room all on their own 🥰
Yes, it took work. Yes, we lost a little sleep. Yes, you can do it.

For some of us, boundary holding with our kids is a fresh nightmare. The screaming that follows, the tantrum that ensues, it is just so.much.easier.to.give.in. I mean, I literally avoid conflict SO much that when Starbucks gives me the wrong coffee order I enthusiastically say, "THANK YOU SO MUCH!" no less than 16 times, tell them how much I love it, then give a 50% tip. People pleasers unite (🙋🏻‍♀️).

BUT, when it comes to our kids, boundaries are key:
✨"I hear you want more iPad, we are all done with iPad today."
✨"You want cookies for lunch. That's not on the menu today."
✨"Hurting someone is not ok. I won't let you."

Did you just cringe and tense up when reading those? Okaaay me too. BUT, here's 2 perspective shifts on boundaries:

1️⃣ Firm, loving boundaries ACTUALLY make our kids feel safer.🤯
Despite what it may seem like, kids feel safest with a calm, confident leader who means what they say. When we go back on our boundaries, when we give in to the extra episode, or 5 more mins at the park to avoid the tantrum, it actually cues the toddler brain to say, "MAYDAYMAYDAY CHAOS." Toddlers CRAVE predictability, so when we say 1 more episode, but sometimes 1 more episode actually means 5 more episodes, that's CONFUSING and chaotic.

When our child is testing the boundaries, imagine them saying, "This is a test. Will you keep me safe? Are you in charge or am I in charge?"

2️⃣ Those BIG upset feelings that come after boundary holding? The screaming, the anger, the sadness, the crying? Those feelings are TOTALLY, completely, absolutely OK.🤯

YEP. Remember, all feelings are OK. In fact, allowing a healthy release of emotion will help them move through the feelings quicker and even builds trust in your relationship - because you're a safe person they can honestly express with, and at the same time, you're a confident adult who makes the big decisions and takes care of them. That combo is dope AF - and builds some lifelong resilience in your kid.

Choking is the 4th cause of unintentional death in children under 5 years old.

Children should always sit upright when eating and should never be left unsupervised.

Cut foods into small pieces, removing seeds and pits. Sausages should be cut lengthwise and then diced. Grapes should always be cut lengthwise.

Use only small amounts of peanut butter spread in a thin layer on bread. It is best to wait until 4 years old before giving your child popcorn.

Offer liquids between mouthfuls and not with food in the mouth.

Toys and household items can also be choking hazards - be cautious and check the floor for any small items.

Letter identification and matching using stickers

“Put them in water or take them outside.” It was the first useful parenting advice I ever got. “Sleep when the baby sleeps”? I think the polite word for that gem is poppycock. But this particular axiom has saved me many times over.

I don’t remember how old my son was when I called my mom in tears because I couldn’t stop his, but his age was probably measured in weeks. Maybe days. “Nothing is working; I don’t know what else to try,” I sobbed. “He’s not hungry or sleepy or wet.” “Try giving him a bath,” she suggested. “Or bundle him up and take him outside for some fresh air. I always say to take them outside or put them in water, and usually, the grumpiness goes away.” It worked that day, and it’s worked many times since. We’ve done baths at 10 a.m. I’ve paced our driveway with a baby in my arms at 2 a.m. And today, at 5:15 p.m. when my children were fighting for the 17th time since they got home from school and I was about to lose it, instead I put one in the bath and I sent the other outside and now maybe all three of us will survive until Dad gets home.
Almost nine years later, it still works.
I can’t give you advice about sleep schedules or feedings or Montessori-approved toys. I don’t know what we’re gonna do about Tik Tok and Snapchat in a few years. But when they’re falling apart at the seams for no apparent reason, take them outside or put them in water.
Oh, and it works on grown-ups, too."
