Even though books make up a relatively small fraction of Amazon’s sales, they constitute more than half of all book purchases in the United States. The company offers something like 30 million different print titles. It owns AbeBooks, the leading site for rare and out-of-print books. And there are many other places online where you can buy books. So why does the world need bookstores?

Being able to browse in person one benefit; the level of customer service is another. “You will probably soon be able to chat online about your book interests with a bot, but a bot is not a person with green hair, a tattoo, and a sense of humor who might have some offbeat suggestions for you,” Louis Menand writes. Then there is what the scholar Janice Radway, adapting Walter Benjamin, calls the “auratic” quality of physical books—people don’t regard them as ordinary commodities. But the chief rationale offered for brick-and-mortar bookstores today is that they are community-building spaces. Booksellers “are practitioners of bibliotherapy,” Menand continues. “They introduce people to books that will help them overcome grief or minister to confusions about life choices or personal identity. . . . That is what it means to run a bookstore. The rewards are not just material. The bookstore survives by redefining itself.”

Menand writes about the value of independent bookstores in the online era: https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/8kOdMs

ARCHIVISTS & PRESERVERS / MAKING NEW(S)

DATE: Sunday 8 Sept @ 5pm
Venue:

What is it about our stories—Caribbean stories—that endure, that move us, that take us beyond the flash of the moment? What is the work of nonfiction? What is the work of history and memory, research and preservation? What is the role and the risk of technology—the digital humanities—in telling those Caribbean stories? How should they be told? What forms should they take?

Join Kevin Adonis Browne as he chats with award-winning journalist and archivist Dominic Kalipersad about the Caribbean story as nonfiction.

Together, they will explore the interplay of memory, fact, and imagination that help us remember who we were, see who we are, and imagine who we can be.

Kevin A. Browne is Associate Professor of Rhetoric at Syracuse University and author of ‘Tropic Tendencies: Rhetoric, Popular Culture, and the Anglophone Caribbean’, ‘High Mas: Carnival and the Poetics of Caribbean Culture’, and ‘A Sense of Arrival’ (forthcoming from Duke University Press in November 2024).
