A Memorable Start to the School Year!
Last week, we welcomed our new Grade 1 students with an inspiring opening ceremony. To mark the beginning of their learning journey, the students passed through a symbolic arch filled with meaningful items.
First, they walked under qīngcōng, a reminder to stay sharp and embrace intelligence (cōngming).
Next came qíncài, representing the importance of diligence and hard work.
Then, they were greeted by apples, sending a gentle wish for peace and harmony.
Finally, they pulled pencils from the 'smart cow'—a fun and fitting end to this symbolic journey. And so, their adventure in learning began.
For me, this experience was truly inspirational and speaks to what makes teaching in Taiwan so unique. It's moments like these that allow me to witness and share in the richness of the culture.
The key lesson I wish to impart to my students is that if they 'shoot for the moon, even if they miss, they will still land among the stars.' Nothing brings me greater satisfaction than students who demonstrate effort and perseverance, regardless of their initial level of skill.

One way to increase student’s engagement is by using technology:
For our classroom, learning using iPads increases interest among students and helps with classroom management.

We use ClassDojo to manage, boost good behavior,learning and communication etc. it’s a great platform for emplementing a fair reward system. At the end of the semester, the top three students get an amazing reward ( like vouchers for a Mc’donalds meal) and other students get to exchange their accumulated points for a gift

Gg, I i, Xx, Mm , Nn, Uu and Ww are the hardest alphabets sounds for students but we keep trying different ways to teach them until they can distinguish their sounds. Thanks to Dumisani Tshabalala we can try other methods to help students know the sounds of the letters. This was a FUN lesson!🤩

My students managed to sell me this plant 🪴 using English and also told me how to take care of it🥰 I’m so proud of them!
She got first prize for the reading competition. Excellent! Congratulations 🎉 Juby, you worked hard and took every feedback you got to be better!

Reward systems are an important part of teaching and rewarding students for their hard work and participation. They build confidence to do much better next time.
This can encourages appropriate behavior, increased motivation and overall improved academic outcomes.

Project-based learning (PBL) is more than just a teaching method; it’s an immersive, hands-on experience that ignites curiosity, nurtures creativity, teaches life and career skills, and prepares us for the challenges of the real world.
The biggest advantage of PBL is that it increases students’s self-confidence. I saw them find their voice today and try their best to articulate their thoughts about their chosen famous place.
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your students’s English skills improve and develop all the other skills that will help them in the real world, such as team work.

Realia for ESL can make the learning experience more memorable and create connections between objects and vocabulary words or other language concepts. This is my favorite way of teaching! 🙌🏽
