Some words can have different sounds, e.g. the word “One"
-
一(yī), 1 in Mandarin, is the first word.
However, when I watch subtitles in movies, the 一(yī) is not pronounced as the first tone.
-
Why is that? Did I hear it wrong?
-
Not quite, it’s because when it comes to 一(yī),
the tone changes based on the rules.
-
I. First Tone:
1. Used as one word: one, (yī), 一
2. Number: first, (dì yī), 第一
3. Last word: only, (wéi yī), 唯一
# The pitch is high and flat.

II.Second Tone
Followed by the fourth tone
1. Same: (yí yàng), 一样
2. Definitely: (yí dìng), 一定
3. One time: (yí cì), 一次
# It’s the rising tone.

III. Fourth Tone
Not followed by the fourth tone:
1. Together: (yì qǐ), 一起
2. A cup: (yì bēi), 一杯
3. A thousand: (yì qiān), 一千
# It’s the falling tone.

3 Sound features you must know to understand Taiwanese Mandarin better!
"I heard learning Mandarin from movies is a great way. Taiwanese movies sound cool."
"It’s weird… Even I turned on the subtitles, I couldn’t quite get what they are saying."
"Why is that? Is it because my Mandarin listening is not that good yet?"
Not quite, it’s because when it comes to speaking, Taiwanese people have our own way to pronounce some sounds.
【3 Sound features of Taiwanese Mandarin 】
[1.Sound: zh]
Raise your tongue to touch the palate with the back of the tongue tip.
Tongue raising extent:
i. Beijing Mandarin: 100%
ii. Taiwanese Mandarin: 60%
→It sounds like z sometimes.
[2.Sound: f]
i.Most Taiwanese people speak Taiwanese Hokkien.
ii. There’s no /f/ sound in it.
iii. Therefore, some people replace it as /h/.
→Ex:吃饭 chī fàn(eat rice)
[3.Sound: eng]
i.Taiwanse people seldom pronounce /eng/ sound.
ii.Replace /eng/ with /en/.
iii.Make the sound softer.
→ Ex:心情xīn qíng (mood) as xīnqín
