Yesterday, Matson’s Honolulu Terminal team at Sand Island loaded a total of 21 FEMA generators aboard our barge Haleakala, along with additional FEMA relief supplies and 39 other container loads of disaster relief supplies and general cargo. The barge arrived at Kahului this morning, on-time, as scheduled at 0700.

Cargo operations at Kahului Harbor continue uninterrupted and Matson’s twice-weekly service to Maui continues as normal. The company also chartered an extra barge it has been using to make additional capacity available for Maui shipments as needed by disaster response agencies and nonprofit organizations sending supplies to Maui.

Matson is working closely with Federal, State, and County emergency response agencies to ensure needs are met with delivery of emergency equipment and supplies to Maui as part of the ongoing crisis response. Company subsidiary Matson Logistics is the lead logistics provider for FEMA in the Hawaii/Pacific region, providing land logistics and distribution of these emergency supplies from Oahu to Maui.

In addition to working with government agencies, the company is working with a number of its customers and established local nonprofit organizations to deliver relief supplies to Maui. Matson’s barge Haleakala arrived at Kahului on time as scheduled at 0700 this morning, carrying 214 containers of general cargo.

Cargo operations at Maui’s Kahului Harbor continue uninterrupted and unaffected by the wildfires in other areas of the island and Matson’s twice-weekly service to Maui continues as normal.

Matson is working closely with Federal, State, and County emergency response agencies to ensure needs are met with delivery of emergency equipment and supplies to Maui as part of the ongoing crisis response. The company has chartered and begun deploying an extra barge to provide additional available capacity for Maui shipments as needed by response agencies.

In support of the relief efforts as the wildfire crisis continues to unfold on Maui, Matson sailed an extra barge from Honolulu yesterday to transport emergency response equipment and supplies to Maui for the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and the Hawaii Foodservice Alliance (HFA). Columbia arrived at 7:00 a.m. this morning, carrying 32 large generators, including two 30,000-pound units and one 84,000-pound trailer generator set, as well as four 40-foot containers of bottled water to Maui for FEMA. Also onboard are four generators provisioned by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office and three 40-foot refrigerated containers - two containing perishable food and one filled with ice – sent by HFA.

Matson is also transporting one diesel generator on the barge to provide extra support for refrigerated containers in its Kahului Terminal, and 30 chassis trailers to support anticipated additional cargo volumes on Maui.

Matson’s barge Haleakala arrived at Kahului on its normal schedule Friday morning, delivering 191 containers of goods.

Cargo operations at Maui’s Kahului Harbor continue uninterrupted and unaffected by the wildfires in other areas of the island and Matson’s twice-weekly service to Maui continues as normal.

Matson is working closely with Federal, State, and County emergency response agencies to speed delivery of emergency equipment and supplies to Maui as part of the ongoing crisis response.

In addition to working with government agencies, the company is working with a number of its customers to send shipments of relief supplies to Maui and is in communication with nonprofit organizations about shipments to Maui.

Matson’s barge, Haleakala, arrived at Kahului at 7:00 am this morning with 191 containers aboard containing generators and emergency supplies, and equipment to assist the community in the wake of the fire devastation on Maui.

Matson operates a hub-and-spoke system in Hawaii, sailing mainline containerships between the U.S. West Coast and Honolulu three times a week, with connecting service to the Neighbor Islands on owned barges. We will maintain our normal schedule of barge arrivals at Kahului on Tuesdays and Fridays. We have also scheduled one extra Maui sailing, on Sunday, August 20, and are considering additional sailings to Maui should they be needed.

Today is National Maritime Day.

The U.S. Maritime Industry is the pillar of our national economy and security. Today we honor that industry and the men and women who play such a vital role in America’s success.

In 1933, Congress decreed May 22 to be National Maritime Day. This date was chosen in honor of SS Savannah, which departed from Savannah, Georgia, on May 22, 1819, and became the first successful steam-powered ship to successfully cross any ocean.

More than 80% of all commercial goods are transported by sea. America’s merchant mariners and all maritime industry workers, are an indispensable link in the commercial supply chain, moving cargo, across 25,000 miles of waterways and nearly 400 commercial ports. They also are vital to the defense and national security of our county. In times of crisis, our maritime workers are called upon to transport goods and troops to locations around the world.
