PRESIDENT FEIGNS SHOCK AT HIGH POVERTY PREVALANCE IN BUSOGA.
During the recent commemorations of Bishop Hannington in Mayuge, President Museveni left the audience baffled when he underhandedly claimed to be shocked by the high levels of poverty in Busoga Region. It’s worth noting that the president has been to Busoga more the 100 times and that the high rates of poverty are not a new phenomenon.
President Museveni also told organisers of the Bishop Hannington Day Celebrations in Kyando, Mayuge District not to bother calling him for another such event unless the area exhibits a change in general infrastructural development and poverty alleviation.
President Museveni had travelled by road to the venue and exclaimed that he was disappointed with the works of government officials and politicians in the area, noting that the people have not been helped enough to get out of poverty.
QUICK FACTS
1. From as early as the 1930s to 1970s Busoga was second only to Buganda in wealth. Commercial cotton growing and later industry was a major boost to Busoga economy.
2. Today, of Uganda’s fourteen sub regions (Incl Kampala as a region), Busoga is only wealthier than Bukedi, and Karamoja. Although it’s worth noting that some statistics also include, Bugisu, West Nile, Teso and Acholi.
3. In fact, when Jinja District (Busoga’s wealthiest District) is excluded from Busoga, Busoga is only wealthier than Karamoja (for very obvious reasons).
4. In the nearly forty years of NRM rule, Busoga region has seemed to be on a backward trajectory, despite tremendous growth in other regions.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met and held discussions with the Kyabazinga of Busoga HRH William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV.
In a meeting that took place at State House Entebbe on Wednesday 2nd November 2022, the President and the Kyabazinga discussed key issues concerning the development of Busoga Kingdom.
And among the issues discussed, included the Busoga Properties which are still being possessed by the Central Government.
The Head of State ordered the Attorney General. Hon Kiryowa Kiwanuka to liase with the Minister for Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda and the kingdom officials to verify the list of properties where he will later draft a white paper that shall be discussed by the Cabinet.

JINJA-KAMULI ROAD; THE MOST PROMISED, UNDELIVERED ROAD.
In 2001, when President Museveni first promised that government will tarmac the Jinja-Mbulamuti-Kamuli-Bukungu road (simply known as the amber court road), the Kyabazinga, HRH William Nadiope was still in primary school, Bujjagali Falls were alive and the biggest falls along the River Nile, Joseph Kony war was still raging in Northern Uganda, the East African Community had just been revived, Jose Chameleon’s Mama Mia was the hit song and this writer, now 23, was only two years old.
“We are looking at tarmacking the Iganga-Bulopa-Kamuli, Kamuli-Namwendwa-Kaliro, Jinja-Budondo-Mbulamuti-Kamuli roads and another 22 kilometers for roads with in Kamuli town,” President Museveni promised, while campaigning in Namasanda village, Bugabula south constituency in Kamuli district in 2001.
The 22 Kilometers of Kamuli were delivered; yet, every year that followed and every election since then, the works on that road have remained a pipe dream.
