For your reflection
Six-year-old Austrian boy “Werfel” receiving a new pair of shoes at the Am Himmel orphanage, donated by the Junior Red Cross in America. Published in the LIFE Magazine in 1946.
Life for each of us can be frustrating if not totally hard sometimes. Whether it’s something physically debilitating, a financial struggle, a broken relationship, family drama or not discovering our life purpose yet, we can spiral downwards into a vortex of discouragement, depression or despair.
I posted the below picture because it reminded me of two things; 1) There is always someone who has challenging circumtances greater than my own and 2) I need perspective when I’m going through challenging circumstances.
In World War II Europe, America and Japan were turned upside down. The loss of lives, money and property was unimaginable! People’s normal routines were literally turned broken into pieces by cruel dictators like Hi**er, Mussolini and General Tojo. Yet in spite of his difficult circumstance this impoverished little boy found joy when given a new pair of shoes by the Red Cross. This 6 year old child was thankful for something most of us in America take for granted- shoes. He was elated because his old shoes were worn out and he couldn’t take a step without feeling rocks and other sharp objects under his feet.
It’s all about perspective. We need to ask God to help us see the silver lining in our circumstances lest we plunge into a pit of self-pity and the “Woe is Me Syndrome.” When we’re feeling down let’s remember to ask the Lord to remind us that He is still sitting on His throne fully in charge not only of the universe, but also of our lives as well. I’m preaching to the choir here because I woke up feeling down and discouraged this morning. But, when I read the caption about this little boy I was reminded to praise God and thank Him for reminding me that He is good and His love endures forever!
Have a blessed week,
Pastor Rob
