Meet Utah! When he first arrived at SafeHaven, he was very shy. He has been in a loving foster home and his foster parent had this to share about him:

"When I first brought Utah home he was pretty much unsure of everything. When I first introduced him to my clan he was very timid at first but as I sat with him he warmed up to the small breeds but was very unsure about my Heelers and Aussies. It took a few days before he actually wasn’t afraid and began interacting with them. He has never shown any signs of aggression even when scared. Usually when he is scared he tries to get away or cries if he can’t. He has just started to growl now when he is unsure of something. I think mine have started showing him the ropes…. (😊)

He is good with cats and kittens. He doesn’t chase cats, he has been good around the chickens (they are free range).

He is potty trained at my house, he is kennel trained, he is great during feeding as he knows his place and waits for his dish. He loves his round bed and blankets and sleeps with my little guys at night in my room in a circular pen. He sleeps all through the night. He is now getting in and out of the car without being frightened. If I have left him home while I am at work, he does great in a large wire crate, and is happy to see my son and daughter and gets excited with the rest of my clan when I get home.

He loves his treats he gets if I leave and can’t take him with me. He loves hooves to chew on. He loves playing with his buddy Axelle (my 4 ½ month old Frenchie), they play keep away with the crinkle soft toys, they chase each other, and they wrestle. Utah never gets too rough. He also loves a smaller kong toy.

He understands and listens to the word no and also good boy. He is starting to understand when I tell him something is ok and give him loves. He loves to go on walks, he has really come out of his shell on a leash. Loud noises still startle him or scare him and then we stop and sit together until he feels comfortable walking past it. Sometimes when something really scares him, he shuts down and won’t walk so I carry him by it still giving him loves and letting him know it is ok. Usually it is a large barking dog or loud piece of machinery. He is good with us vacuuming the house and normal household noises like washer, dryer, etc.

He is great about riding in a car. He lays down, is quiet and usually sleeps.

In the 3 weeks that he has been with me he truly has come a long way. He really is a love, easy to train, and responds well to commands. It is going to take time, love, and patience with this guy to bring him out of being so timid and scared. Once he trusts you and loves you he is yours and you are his. He is a very happy guy and is going to make someone a very loving and loyal companion.
