Here's a photo of the flowers we prepared for Cornell staff on the first day of reopening this week! Thanks to all of you who donated -- we raised over $700! We spent roughly half of that amount on flowers from Farm Girl Flowers, while the rest of the money will be donated to the Cornell PTA general fund. Big shout out to Britt Tanner, Kat Simonyi, Rita Lucarelli, Nadia Vitko, and everyone else who helped out, and the Buy Nothing Albany group for donating mason jars and vases. We hope all the Cornell kids had a smooth week of school, whether in-person or remote!
For years now, AUSD's Board of Education & Administration have neglected its own Special Education Department with dire consequences for AUSD students with disabilities; while this neglect predates school closures under shelter-in-place, the pandemic has exacerbated these issues and shed a light on the District's default policy of defunding Special Education programs first and supporting AUSD students with disabilities last.
AUSD's approach to Special Education is in dire need of systemic change. So, join the rally and

The Marin IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) is planning a parent education presentation on how we can keep our teachers, kids, families, and community safe as schools re-open. However, given the upcoming deadline for the elementary school return to hybrid survey, as well as mid-winter break, we're not able to have this presentation before parents need to make a decision about sending their kids to in-person school.
Thus we've recruited a small panel of local health care and mental health care providers who have volunteered to answer questions parents may have related to health and safety around COVID-19 and children in school. We can answer questions about topics like COVID-19 transmission in schools, COVID-19 testing, masks, mental health, vaccines, and child/family behaviors that decrease risk of COVID-19. We are not able to answer questions about school schedules, logistics, classrooms, or site-specific issues.
Since we are on break, the usual communication channels might not be available this week. But we wanted to try to get it out to as many people as possible soon, even if we can't get it sent directly from the schools.
Thanks,
Shannon Huffaker

CORNELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA
Greeting Fellow Coyotes,
On behalf of the entire PTA board, I would like to welcome your family to Cornell for the 2019-20 school year. We join you in the anticipation of an exciting and productive year. This is my second year as the PTA president, and I am looking forward to serving you and your family well. I am excited to share with you the goals and mission of this year’s PTA.
First and foremost, we hope to encourage and foster a strong Cornell community. We also hope to increase active PTA memberships, support installation of overhead projector in each classroom, provide transportation for some field trips in each grade, provide funds left by the budget cut gaps, and continue to work on the greening of the Cornell campus. The PTA would also like to support some old favorites such as grade level grants, individual teacher grants, continue with monthly scholastic newsletter for students. We will continue to support the Albany Enrichment fun in a new more sustainable agreement between the 3 elementary schools, which provides music, dance, and art for all AUSD students equally.
This year we hope to continue our ongoing efforts to engage the Cornell community in fun family friendly activities and fundraisers. For example, all movie nights will be free for PTA members and their families. We will continue with our Bi-monthly PTA newsletter on this site and continue with our second annual Cornell parents night auction. Both were a great success last year!
