We built lady bug houses today snd learned about the parts of a ladybug! Did you know they eat aphids which damage many of our plants?
Our alumni came for a visit and helped create a beautiful salad with strawberries, homegrown lettuce, pecans and cheese! It was delicious!

Spotlight on our amazing garden volunteers!

Meet Ellen - volunteer extraordinaire for the past 10 plus years! Ellen has been such a kind and loving presence in our garden for many years now.
After Ellen retired from the NYS Dept of Health she became involved with the Master Gardener program at Albany County Cooperative Ext and (happily for us ) found The Friendship garden.
In Ellen’s words-
“ At the garden, I enjoy helping the students explore, learn and have fun. I enjoy the camaraderie with the other volunteers and our wonderful program coordinator AND when our fruits and veggies are ready we all love the great snacks! “

Thank you Ellen!

We learned all about recycling, reusing and reducing today in our weekly garden club! The kids played a fun Earth game, sorted trash for recycling, and created bags for grocery shopping! Some of our friends preferred planting and climbing and that’s okay! We love garden time! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Wow! What a great day in The Friendship Garden. We made bean teepees with Dr Ryan and Miss Sue, planted flowers with our wonderful volunteers Wini, Ellen and Carolyn and Linda led us in a wonderful concert as we gathered together at the end of our session. The students are also painting rocks to create a memorial garden for our friend Mr Bill. ❤️
We love being together in the garden!

Getting our hands dirty!

Photos from The Friendship Garden of the Delaware Community's post 05/16/2024

Another special day in the garden! Our friend Rich Daley of Sunray Permaculture taught the kids how to make seed balls using clay, coconut coir and seeds. The kids loved getting their hands gooey and dirty! The best part ( according to the kids) was doing some guerilla gardening by throwing them into a vacant lot. We hope they grow and beautify the neighborhood.
Thanks Rich and Spots the bunny!
We also had a special visitor Mrs corcionne- a former beloved teacher at DCS. We were all super excited to see her and meet Her girls.

Sunny gorgeous day in The Friendship garden! We put up fences to keep those ground hogs away, planted tomatoes, watermelons and green beans and learned about tulip bulbs and how they grow!
Our little chefs prepared hummus with fresh veggies for snack! We always work on getting kids to try new things. It was a success!

Thankful the rain stopped so we could get outdoors today!
The kids learned all about the strawberry life cycle, drew scientific drawings in their garden books, found some worms and dug in the dirt! We are always so happy to see kids play and explore away from electronics etc.

Last garden club of the year is always sad! It was such a special session this fall for kids AND adults! We celebrated by doing yoga in the garden, making cool bird feeders , spreading compost and soil and making yogurt parfaits with The Honest Weight food coop!
Thanks Amy!
Special thanks to my asst. Kenneth’s mom for sending in pizza which we also thoroughly enjoyed! Big hugs to all the junior gardeners and volunteers! See you in the spring! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌈🌺

Pumpkins and spiders were the theme at garden club today! The kids enjoyed painting pumpkins and learning about spiders with Miss Wini! They learned how to spin a web and a few spider facts. Our kids really enjoy working and learning in the garden. We are so grateful to the Holy Spirit church for the years of land use! What a gift!

What a beautiful day! We were excited that Dr Ryan came and hung out with us! He’s working really hard at Albany medical College.
Lots of activities today- prepping the garden for next years planting by adding soil and compost, leaf rubbings and garden journaling were lots of fun! Brenda taught the kids to make a very yummy guacamole today ( Guatemalan style!) Her helpers did a great job chopping and smashing! And best of all- our flowers are still blooming!

We had a great day in the garden today! The weather was perfect. We are enjoying these warm fall days. Today we planted our garlic, harvested carrots and kale, sorted and saved seeds and added soil and compost to the beds for winter. Thanks to the snack helpers we had a yummy snack of our home grown carrots and hummus! The kids gobbled it up! If you grow it they will eat it!
Also a shout out to special visitor Jess ( Mrs Flower’s daughter) who visited us today and helped the kids finish the Dino mural. It looks great.

Yoga in the garden with Amy, new volunteers from Albany Medical Center, planting herbs, digging weeds, turning the compost piles and eating snacks! What could be better!???
Best part of all was at dismissal when families from all different cultures came and got produce leftover and donated by Roxbury Farm!
