White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health | health.gov 08/30/2022

Virtual Conference Date: Wednesday, September 28
https://health.gov/our-work/nutrition-physical-activity/white-house-conference-hunger-nutrition-and-health

On May 4th of this year, President Biden announced that the White House will host a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health this September. This is the first such conference held in over 50 years.

The goal of the Biden-Harris Administration is to end hunger, and to increase healthy eating and physical activity across the United States by 2030—as well as decreasing diet-related diseases and their associated social disparities. The White House reached out to key stakeholders for input to inform the national plan on how to achieve this goal.

The Food Pantries for the Capital District responded with 8 key strategies. Here are Strategies 7 and 8:

7. Fully integrate and fund a continuum of Food as Medicine (FAM) interventions - Veggie Rx, Medically Tailored Groceries, Medically Tailored Meals, Food Farmacies, Nutrition Education – through all public health plans such as Medicaid and Medicare.

8. Support a healthy dignified accessible charitable food system for those who are in need, fall through the cracks, or are unable to work full time, and in the case that Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs are not funded at a level to provide nutrition security.

On this beautiful Friday, we would like to take a moment to thank Schär for their generous acts of kindness towards the celiac and gluten sensitive community!

Schär recently helped us access so much gluten-free foods that our Feeding Gluten-Free program was able to get food to TEN different food pantries that serve communities in need. Much of the food was donated by Schär, and the rest was purchased by our FGF program at a generous discount. We were then able to coordinate this food to be delivered all over!

We can’t thank Schär enough for what they do for the GF community. We also have to thank the food pantries for doing it all: receiving the foods, keeping them, and delivering them to those who need it. Those in need deserve access to GF foods, and donations like this help make that happen!

3. Raise Federal minimum wages to a level that equates to living wages.

4. Fully fund Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP/WIC/Meals on Wheels) at an investment level that is needed to lift households needing assistance, those who fall through the cracks of a newly instituted living wage minimum, or who are unable to work a full-time job, to nutrition security.

2. Secure sustainable alignment of Federal Policies, Programs, and Investments in support of the goals of this conference by addressing campaign finance reform and ensure that lobbying efforts of Big Food, Big Ag, and the larger food manufacturing industry that don’t align with the goals of this conference are not given consideration.

Inflation impacting local food pantries 07/18/2022

Demand on food pantries is on the rise, due to inflation and the end of government programs.

“It’s not just people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty, it is a lot of people who are working jobs, some people are working multiple jobs and are still unable to make ends meet,” said Natasha Pernicka, Executive Director of The Food Pantries for the Capital District.

Inflation impacting local food pantries The U.S. inflation rate hit 9.1 percent in June, following a months long pattern of rising costs causing more strain on everyone including local organizations that help people in need.
