2020 has certainly been one for the ages – where words like zoom, masks, and social distancing have become a part of our daily vocabulary.

Here at home, we have been inundated with the effects of COVID-19. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. Our utmost responsibility begins with our family. Please continue to ensure their health and well-being as well as your own.

Nick Spano, President of Empire Strategic Planning,
is joining HVEDC'S Board Of Directors

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (July 9, 2020) Hudson Valley Economic Development Corp. (HVEDC) announced the addition of Nick Spano, President, Empire Strategic Planning to its Board of Directors. Mr. Spano is one of the leading lobbyist and business consultants in New York.

Mr. Spano expertise in government affairs, healthcare and business development will be a huge asset to help HVEDC fulfills its mission to grow the regional economy.

Senator Spano, President of Empire Strategic Planning, enjoyed a distinguished 28-year career in the New York State Legislature. He was first elected to the State Assembly at age 25 representing the City of
Yonkers. In 1986 he was elected to the State Senate, variously representing Yonkers, Greenburgh , Mount Pleasant and Eastchester.

It was as a Senator that Nick Spano made his mark as a tireless and effective advocate for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness. He was named Chairman of the Senate Committee on Mental Health and Development Disabilities, which at the time was called the Committee on Mental Hygiene.

From the start Senator Spano took it on himself to travel around the state and see for himself facilities that served those with special needs. It was just 15 years after Willowbrook was exposed by Geraldo Rivera, and New York was still struggling to locate acceptable community-based facilities throughout the
state.

Senator Spano consistently fought for adequate funding for community-based facilities, and for proper educational and medical care. His landmark report, Pay Now or Pay Later, laid out the economic case for providing adequate mental health facilities. With that report, New Yorkers came to understand that, not only was it a moral imperative to provide adequate care for those in need, but it also made financial sense. Senator Spano succeeded in fighting against unfair cutbacks to mental health and developmental disability budgets during difficult economic times.

Senator Spano can also point with pride to countless chapters of law that, with his sponsorship, improved the lives of New Yorkers with developmental disabilities or mental illness.

Later Senator Spano went on to serve as Chairman of the Senate Labor Committee, the Committee on Investigations and Government Operations, and served as Senior Assistant Majority Leader.

He comes from a large family, having 15 brothers and sisters. His father, Leonard, served as a County Legislator and as a Westchester County Clerk. His brother Michael is currently the Mayor of Yonkers after serving many years in the State Assembly. He is a proud father of two adult children and married to his wife, Linda.

He is currently president of Empire Strategic Planning, a government relations firm that represents a variety of clients and is one of the fastest-growing lobbying firms in New York State. The firm represents a variety of clients ranging from hospitals and health-care facilities, to utilities, to labor and trade
associations, to private sector corporations. Nick Spano and Empire Strategic Planning are particularly proud to represent Ferncliff as the Saich Family and their dedicated staff seek to improve and nurture the lives of young people with developmental disabilities.
