Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York

We are Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York, we represent almost 10,000 girls of courage, confidence

Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justi

Congratulations to Gold Award Girl Scout Kaitlin from Howes Caves!

Kaitlin built 10 insulated cat shelters and dispersed them around her community. Each cat shelter acts as a warm space for stray cats in poor weather and the winter. These shelters also act as a way for the property owners to safely catch stray animals to bring to spay and neuter clinics. This helps cut down on the stray cat population and educates the community on the value of Trap Vaccinate Return programs.

Mother Nature put on quite a show and knocked out our power at Queensbury Service Center. But don't worry, our team has gone digital and we're working remotely. We're still here for you, answering calls and emails as always. Our building is taking a little break, but we'll let you know when it's ready to welcome you back.

All our other service centers and camps are still up and running.

We’d like to applaud our camp staff for utilizing our effective safety plans to prepare for and in some cases shelter campers during the recent severe weather events. Their dedication to safety has ensured camper safety and positive experiences under challenging conditions!

Stay safe out there!

7 Ways to Be Respectful (And a One-Step Trick to Getting More Respect From Others) 07/11/2024

"While respect should be second nature to us (Aretha made darn sure we knew how to spell it and practice it), there seems to be a major deficit of it in our world today. From mean tweets to cliquish behavior on the playground, respect is plainly overdue for a comeback. The good news is that you can play a big role in starting a respect revolution just by modeling respect for yourself and teaching your girl to follow suit."

Welcome Freya to the GSNENY Board of Directors!

Dr. Freya Mercer has 20 years of experience in public education, first as a middle school English teacher, then as the K-12 Director of Humanities Integration in a small city school district, and has been working for the past 5 years as a building-level administrator, first as a high school principal before pursuing her passion for middle-level education as the principal at Coxsackie-Athens Middle School. She
has built her career around empowering students and teachers to be the best they can be and strives to be a role model in thought and deed.

Freya is passionate about providing opportunities for girls and young women to explore careers and interests, participate in community service, and build positive relationships with other young women. She is also committed to providing experiences that help others connect with nature and try new things.

"I believe in the Girl Scout mission and want to support our local troops. I see first hand through my own daughters and students the leadership and personal development Girl Scouts provides.

I hope to help improve recruitment and have our troops better represent previously underserved populations through more inclusive practices and targeted outreach.

I am excited to help our Council continue to grow and flourish!" - Freya Mercer

Congratulations to Gold Award Girl Scout Emily from Clifton Park!

Due to rising mosquito populations and declining bee populations, Emily built and installed bat houses and bee hotels along local hiking trails. By educating her community, she demonstrated helping your local ecosystem does not have to be hard and everyone can make a difference.

A heartfelt thank you to all supporters of our 4th annual - and first ever in-person - fundraiser for camp and outdoor programming! A special shout-out to Melanie Sawyer, our esteemed guest, who made the event truly memorable!

Last week we marked a milestone for Hidden Lake Camp, as we joyfully celebrated its 80th birthday! We had the pleasure of welcoming Forester Ben Pokon, who educated us all on the intricate art of forestry management. This was alongside a nostalgic exhibit curated by the GSNENY archives committee, taking us down memory lane. And of course, no birthday is complete without cake!

We're excited to introduce Dr. Debernee Privott, Chair of the Board of Directors. Debernee has served on the Girl Scouts of Northeastern Board of Directors since June 2016 and has most recently been the chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force.

In her professional life, Debernee is committed to public engagement. She currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Public Engagement with the College of Arts and Sciences and as the Director of the UAlbany in the High School Program at the University at Albany, SUNY. She also serves as a guest lecturer with the Rockefeller College.

In her own words: "My mother’s commitment to Girl Scouts was instrumental to my decision to continue to be involved in Girl Scouts from childhood to adulthood. A great friend encouraged me to consider service as a board member beyond this involvement. Understanding the tremendous impact that my mother had on my life and the lives of many in her leadership role with Girl Scouts, becoming a board member was the next step toward making a greater effort “to help people at all times” and to “make the world a better place.”

I continue to recall lessons that I learned as a very young Girl Scout that remain with me today, like leaving things in better condition than I found them and keeping promises. At times, the uplifting songs that we sang at camp or at meetings will come to me and I will be reminded of the “why” behind the work, which enhances the quality of the work. My Mom was a phenomenal Girl Scout Troop leader; and I am grateful for the bar being set so high! Thanks, Mom!"

We are so grateful for her leadership and look forward to the future of Girl Scouts in the counties we serve.

"You’re raising your girl to be responsible for what she says and does, and know when and how to give a sincere apology when she messes up. But is she apologizing more than she needs to?

Studies show women are more likely than men to presume they were in the wrong or think their own actions might have upset someone, and those patterns start early. There could be many reasons for this, but some think girls and women are quick to apologize because they’re taught to “keep the peace” and be nurturers who put the emotional wellbeing and happiness of others first."
