Be Aware of several incidents where criminals place spikes or objects on public roads to immobilise vehicles and rob the occupants of their valuables. These incidents predominantly take place on highways.

Due to the low visibility and high speeds at which the incidents occur, the nature of the crimes makes it quite difficult to safeguard oneself completely from criminals.

_ The following tips that will assist motorists with reducing their risk on the roads and increase their chances of avoiding the horrid situation_

- Avoid driving over anything on the road, including plastic bags; criminals are known to disguise the spikes with plastic, pieces of cardboard, and fabric. Recently, reports have been received of criminals placing life-size ‘puppets’ on the road to imitate hit-and-run situations.
- If you do drive over spikes - don’t stop! Reduce your speed and keep driving away from the criminals towards a safe area. Drive slowly, and do not be concerned about damaging the wheel rims – they can be replaced.
- Reduce your speed to increase your chances of seeing obstacles on the road.
- Concrete lintels are being used as well. If you cannot avoid them any other way, slow down and carefully drive over them.
- If the circumstances allow, travel straddling two lanes as it may help you miss spikes placed in the middle of a lane.
- If another vehicle is present, drive six seconds or more behind so their driving can alert you if anything is amiss.
- If you spot an obstacle before you reach it, move into the emergency lane or onto the grass if that highway section allows it. If the highway is quiet enough and safety allows for it, drive across the island (if possible) and travel in the opposite direction.

In a joint integrated operation involving the Vereeniging VCIU tracing team, Kliprivier SAPS, Sekuriteit sonder grense, Afri Gaurd, Midvaal peace officers, EXPOL, COMPOL, Elite VIP, Fox Secutiy, Gauteng Traffic Chopper, Wardens and SNIPRA, a lookout was issued for a silver Toyota Corolla with six suspects involved in an armed business robbery at a liquor store in Duncanville, Vereeniging.

Using License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras, the vehicle was tracked, and various law enforcement units mobilized to monitor and block possible escape routes. The suspects' vehicle was soon spotted on Springbok Road, heading towards Kliprivier.

As officers set up a roadblock, the suspects attempted to make a U-turn but collided with a truck, damaging their vehicle. The suspects immediately fled on foot, but after a brief chase, all six suspects were successfully apprehended.
