Today we honor Indigenous Peoples' Day in New Mexico and across the nation.
Our state is rich with Indigenous history, culture, and wisdom—especially when it comes to raising and educating young children. Let's recognize the invaluable contributions of Indigenous early childhood educators and caregivers:
•Preserving language: Many teach Native languages, ensuring cultural continuity.
•Cultural practices: Integrating traditional stories, art, and customs into early learning.
•Holistic approach: Emphasizing connection to community, nature, and spirituality in child development.
•Intergenerational learning: Involving elders in early childhood education.
To our Indigenous early childhood professionals: Your work is vital in nurturing the next generation and keeping traditions alive. Thank you!
Today is World Mental Health Day. Let's shine a light on the mental wellbeing of our early childhood professionals. These dedicated individuals nurture our children's growth, but often face high stress and burnout.

A few weeks ago at the NM Early Childhood Association Conference, we honored Baji Rankin with the inaugural Legacy Award.
Baji has worked in early childhood education for 50 years as a teacher of children and adults, a researcher, a scholar, an executive, and an advocate.
In 1995, Baji moved to New Mexico and during her time here has held positions as Director of Manzanita Early Learning Center, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Multicultural Education at the University of New Mexico, and Executive Director of the New Mexico Association for the Education of Young Children for over 15 years. This is just a small sample of all that she has done in the Land of Enchantment.
She works to develop well-educated, diverse, and fairly compensated early childhood educators, which are the key to ensuring high quality early childhood education. She is inspired by recognizing the amazing capacities of ALL children.
Please join us in celebrating and honoring Baji Rankin for the tremendous impact she has had on early childhood care and education in New Mexico.

"By investing in high-quality early childhood education and care, we can set the stage for a lifetime of improved health, well-being, and cognitive development.
However, low wages present the single greatest barrier to building the high-quality prenatal-to-five system in New Mexico that can lift families out of poverty and secure bright futures for New Mexico children." -Secretary Elizabeth Groginsky
Secretary Groginsky recently authored an op-ed in the Albuquerque Journal highlighting the great work New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department is leading when it comes to wage and career ladders.
