Dustin Hopinkah (Pueblo of Acoma) is this week’s ! Let’s give a shoutout to this senior majoring in Economics and minoring in Anthropology. Dustin values community and has found opportunities to be involved across campus & beyond – he’s a member of the Economics Club, volunteers with , and participates in community cleanups, food drives, and harvesting crops in his Pueblo. His career goals are to use his economics degree to work within his Pueblo on community development. A research project that he's focused on are how to restore brownfield sites, especially those on reservations, into something useful, such as community centers. Dustin knows that it's important to study so spends any free time he's got focusing inside Zimmerman Library and AISS. Off campus, Dustin likes to hang out at the Three Sisters Volcanoes, located on the west edge of Albuquerque, and enjoys playing basketball, learning to speak Keres, and learning more about his culture. A couple of his proudest UNM moments include acing an extremely difficult economics course and winning a co-ed basketball tournament with his best friend. He's motivated by his parents and grandparents because of the journey they took to succeed. As a community-minded student, Dustin is proud to represent his hometown and whatever he learns at UNM, he wants to share and apply that knowledge within New Mexico. Dustin would like fellow Lobos to remember that we can wish, hope, and pray for change, but he encourages students to also put in the footwork to create change. We look forward to more great things from Dustin!

Welcome Back, Lobos!! We’re kicking off the Fall ’24 with Mathew White (Diné). Mathew is a first-year student majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. He jump-started his university experience by participating in the 2024 American Indian Summer Bridge (AISB) Program this summer where he was able to complete an English course and built a supportive network amongst a cohort of Indigenous scholars. Mathew is passionate about healthcare; he plans to pursue a career as an anesthesiologist and support efforts to increase healthcare access on the Navajo Nation and within Indigenous communities. He’s excited to continue exploring research opportunities available at UNM; as a high school student, he served as an intern for a Sleep Doctor and researched fruit flies in partnership with a Stanford’s School of Medicine research program. His first few weeks at UNM are filled with finding areas to study, hangout, and organizations to join! So far, he’s connected with AISS by participating in the 2024 AISB Fall Experience Program and he’s serving as an AISS Ambassador! He’s also found a few fav study spots – the “Harry Potter study rooms” at Zimmerman Library and the Duck Pond. To stay motivated, Mathew looks to his hero, his dad, who inspires him to work hard and persevere in the face of tough obstacles. Another source of motivation are his friends who inspire him to do his best and live compassionately. His words of advice to his fellow Lobos are, “Don’t be afraid to take up a challenge!” We look forward to Mathew’s spectacular time at and beyond!
