Making Peace With Ourselves in Troubled Times - Peace Talks Radio (58:30 / 53:30) 07/03/2024

LONG POST BUT PLEASE READ ON:

It's important for me, today, to acknowledge the passing of an extraordinary human being. Meditation teacher Eric Kolvig, our first-ever guest on our PEACE TALKS RADIO series, died Tuesday July 2 after a long struggle with lung issues in his last year or two on this plane, close to 80 years of age. I'll not bury the lead by inviting you to click on the link provided below to our first pilot episode in the series, done just 10 months after the 9/11 attacks, to hear our host Suzanne Kryder talking at length with Eric about how all of us could manage our lingering anxiety with the state of the world in those fraught days, wondering how we could each move forward to a more peaceful footing, in our day to day lives. Every bit of what Eric offered to us in that conversation is just as relevant today, as it was 22 years ago this month when it was originally recorded in an auditorium on the CNM Campus. https://exchange.prx.org/pieces/47082?m=false

Eric led a hard life to get to his ultimate calling as a meditation teacher for many in an Albuquerque sangha that he was featured in for many years, late 1990's - early 2000's, and for many others at retreats and other locales where he would land over time. He suffered abuse as a child, was marginalized and oppressed for being gay, and was haunted by lingering PTSD and anxiety. But he found his way to the power of meditation, and took the deep dive into it that allowed him to lead others - so skillfully, calmly, gently, and with humor - to discover the restorative powers and empowerment of a life that included a meditative practice of some kind.

For his close friends, who knew of his late life health struggles and the approach of his certain passing, Eric journaled prodigiously about the dying process itself, while also writing of his memories of being a human-being on this earth.

I'm posting here one of his final dispatches to his friends on Caring Bridge, as I think EVERYONE who might read it would feel his strength of character, wisdom, and humor. In short, I honestly feel you'll emerge in a better place from either reading this, and/or listening to Eric in conversation in our program. Please do, set aside some time, to get a little bit acquainted with someone I was blessed to have known, even a little bit, myself. I know a number of people here on Facebook spent even more time with Eric. Today, they are celebrating how much better off they are, better equipped to manage their own journey, for having had that contact with Eric Kolvig.

Please DO READ ON:

June 22, 2024
Dispatch from the Front
The Only Thing that Mattters

Dear friends,

On Tuesday a hospice nurse with 30 years’ practice with the dying came to see me. Based on what she could see, she felt that I will transition soon — “ transition” being the euphemism of choice in the hospice industry. She may be mistaken, of course, but for now I defer to her expert judgment and experience.

You and I have been good for each other here in our little corner of Caring Bridge. None of us could have predicted what we have made together here. For me, your love has made the difficult easier. And I think that for you my love and my words have also made the difficult easier. Thank you — thank you lots — for your serendipitous gift of friendship and love to each other and to me.

If these were the last words I would write to you, what would they be? The words are oh so familiar, quickly read and easily forgotten. But I repeat them anyway because they describe the way to freedom. I have a terminal illness. If I accept what I cannot change, I do not suffer about this illness. In fact, I do not suffer about it. I live near a large, beautiful lake. It would be wonderful to paddle my sea-worthy kayak out around the islands and to swim in the clear, deep waters of Lake Winnipesaukee. That cannot happen. I accept and do not suffer.

I will probably die soon without seeing the outcome of a grave challenge to our democracy and to our constitution. I accept and do not suffer. (From an expanded view, I feel optimism for you with this challenge because I know that all people deep down want to be free. Substitute “freedom” for “peace” in these words from President Eisenhower: “I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it.”)

For most of my life I have had a body that people have seen as desirable. Now this body is misshapen, grossly overweight. Its legs are swollen, with its lower legs covered with sores. I do my best to accept this body as it is. That’s the hardest thing for me to accept. I mostly succeed, so I am mostly free from suffering over this condition that I cannot change.

Isn’t it all pretty obvious? If you cannot change the circumstance, accept whatever is unpleasant to you, and you will not suffer. Allow what you love to pass away. We have to practice — again, and again, and again. If you’re suffering, it means you want something. Let the wanting go, and watch the suffering go with it. Loss is certain. Accept loss if it can’t be changed, and by your acceptance you free yourself from suffering. Identify what you fear most. Imagine what you fear most is actually happening and you cannot change it. Imagine that you accept, even a little, the thing you fear most as it happens. Notice how the fear lessens, and how your suffering lessens.

Does what I write here make sense to you? It’s not theoretical. It really works. I see every day that it works. This is all you need to know in order to experience freedom today, tomorrow, always.

Love, Eric

PS If you would like to have something to remember me by, please consider using the thin little bumper sticker, “Be Good to People,” which is also the name of the web page where the stickers are sold. I have one on the back of my car, one on the back of my iPad case, and one on the back of my bike seat. Use it as a reminder to let be whatever you can’t change. There is no better way to be good to yourself. By the way, I’m pretty sure that this bumper sticker in my back window, plus the white hair, twice spared me a speeding ticket. My last and only speeding ticket was in May 1965. That’s 59 years without a speeding ticket! I speed all the time. What, me worry?

Making Peace With Ourselves in Troubled Times - Peace Talks Radio (58:30 / 53:30) Conversation with meditation teacher Eric Kolvig (Ph.D) and counselor/therapist Reyna Luna about coping with inner conflict, in light of terrorist attacks and war, and in everyday life.

Seeking Solutions to Gun Violence in the USA 06/18/2024

PEACE TALKS RADIO THIS WEEK:

Seeking Solutions To Gun Violence in the USA.

Sadly timely - again. "Since Friday, at least 73 people were killed and 308 were injured in shootings (in the USA) including several incidents at outdoor spaces and gatherings like a Juneteenth celebration in Texas, a splash pad in Michigan, a park in Illinois, and a party in Massachusetts, according to the most recent data from the Gun Violence Archive." ~ USA TODAY

Our program is hosted by our correspondent Emily Cohen, who talks with people working on the front lines in Chicago - (where gun violence still dominates headlines and had 41 incidents in the last 72 hours)- and others who are seeking even some modest national policy shifts toward more gun safety. Our program will air on all of our 70 stations across the nation, including PART 1 of 2 Tuesday morning at 8 on KUNM in our home town of Albuquerque.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation in any amount to our tiny non-profit organization which continues (in our 22nd season now) to protect at least some of the media landscape for practical talk about peacemaking and nonviolent conflict resolution. Or at least consider sharing this post and on-demand link to this episode. LOOK FOR THE DONATE button on our website.

PEACE TALKS RADIO weekly update:

Program broadcasting this week on our 70+ stations in 25 states:

IS THIS WHAT PEACEFUL DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE?

There's no disputing the uptick in the rancor in political discourse. With that, surveys show an increase in stress over politics, and anxiety over discussing politics with family and co-workers. Can we craft more peace of mind when politics don’t go our way? Can we talk with our political opposites? All open for more discussion, this time on Peace Talks Radio, from the archive - broadcast first in 2017...our panels thoughts then are every bit - if not more - relevant as back then.

If you can't tune in over the airwaves, here 'tis on-demand:

KUNM, our Albuquerque/Santa Fe affiliate, airs a different episode - one of our latest - Tuesday morning at 8:

SEEKING SOLUTIONS TO GUN VIOLENCE IN THE USA (PART 1)

We explore solutions to gun violence in the U.S. from three perspectives - academic, policy and on the streets. One of the most promising models to address gun violence is Community Violence Intervention (CVI). CVI programs use a localized approach, identify those who are at the highest risk and work to reduce violence through targeted interventions and peer outreach. Listen in or hear it on-demand.

Hear Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire this week on PEACE TALKS RADIO:

"War is not working. Nuclear weapons are of no use to us, in the interconnected world today. You can't really drop a nuclear bomb (anywhere to stop anyone). You've got to go in there, sit down with them, find out what the problem is and solve it. These problems, that we're now faced with, need alternative thinking and alternative ways of solving them. Northern Ireland was a model of what we have got to do: multi-track diplomacy, how we've actually got to deal with these problems. We've got to move away from the old methods: militarism, war, and nuclear weapons. They're not working - quite apart from the fact that they're immoral, illegal, and counter-productive. They just don't work."

Peace Talks Radio: Changing Minds During Election Season (59:00 / 54:00) 05/20/2024

This week on all of our many stations carrying Peace Talks Radio, an encore presentation from our archive that is as fascinating as it was when we first broadcast it originally in 2008. 16 years later, most of it all still rings true.

CHANGING MINDS DURING ELECTION SEASON

Our friends in New Mexico can hear this program Tuesday 5/21 at 8 am. The rest of our listeners to any of our 70 outlets in 24 states will hear it in our regular slot on your station.

And ANYONE can hear it any time at this link from the Public Radio Exchange..

https://exchange.prx.org/pieces/29089-peace-talks-radio-changing-minds-during-election

Whenever election season rolls around, conflict between political camps really heats up. Differences over whom to support can even put friends and family members at odds with each other. Undecided voters may authentically be at odds with themselves. And it's often those undecided voters who swing close elections. In the months leading up to election day, each candidate's campaign workers are trying their best to bring those conflicted voters their way, maybe even change the minds of some voters, whose support for a candidate might be soft.

On this edition of PEACE TALKS RADIO, some generic insight into that mind-changing process that targets the undecided or conflicted voter. Host Suzanne Kryder talks with two people who have written extensively on changing minds, and a political media specialist whose job it is to change some minds.

Guests include political media strategist Rachel Gorlin, also Howard Gardner, Harvard professor and author of the book CHANGING MINDS, and Dave Straker, author of the book, CHANGING MINDS IN DETAIL.

Also a panel including political scientists and a journalist weigh in on political advertising in the 59:00 version of the show heard on some of our stations and at the link posted here.
