Call Palliative Care. We Can Help!
Do you know someone living with a serious illness who has trouble managing care?
Are they having symptoms related to their diagnosis or treatment?
Would they benefit from additional support to make informed decisions related to their diagnosis and quality of life?
Palliative care can help!
Palliative Care:
• Appropriate for any stage of a serious illness
• Can be provided alongside curative treatments
• Provided in most home settings, including assisted living facilities and group homes
• Covered by Medicaid, Medicare Part B, and most private insurances—standard deductibles and copay may apply
Hospice Care:
• Appropriate for individuals living with a prognosis of six months or less
• Focuses on palliative rather than curative treatments
• Provided wherever patients call home
• Covered fully by Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid; most insurance plans also provide hospice care, but coinsurance and deductibles may apply
Are you or your loved one living with a serious illness?
These include, but are not limited to:
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
• HIV/AIDS
• Cancer
• Dementia
• Kidney or Liver Disease
• Advanced Parkinson’s
Are you or your loved one experiencing difficult to manage symptoms related to that illness?
These include, but are not limited to:
• Pain
• Depression
• Dyspnea
• Nausea
• Anxiety
• Insomnia
If you answered yes to both of these questions, our team might be able to help.
We will:
• Establish a plan for your care based on your goals
• Educate you and your loved ones about your serious illness
• Support you or your loved ones as caregivers
• Lead advance care planning conversations
Palliative Care vs. Hospice Care
For so long in healthcare, the words “palliative” and “hospice” have been used interchangeably. Because there is often a fear of “hospice,” palliative is used in its place, but palliative care offers different services to a different type of patient. Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness who may need aggressive symptom management along with curative treatments. Hospice focuses on the care, comfort, and quality of life of a person with a serious illness who is approaching the end of life. Among other services, palliative providers work with patients’ current medical teams to manage symptoms, identify and meet goals of care, and assist with advanced care planning.
The Benefits of Palliative Care
Palliative Care allows patients to live life to the fullest. Our palliative team’s goal is to help patients understand how to strike a balance between the burdens and benefits of medical care and to ensure their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are met. This includes pain and symptom management, open communication with patients and families, and psychosocial support when necessary.
Individuals who have:
• Serious advanced disease
• Had more than two Emergency Department visits or hospital
admissions in the last six months
• Advanced lung, cardiac, renal, or hepatic disease
• Advanced dementia
• Advanced—Stage III or IV—cancer
• A CVA (stroke) with subsequent function decrease of 50% or
greater
• Progressive neurological disease
• HIV/AIDS

Today we remember and honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Throughout the year, our caregivers tell us how some of their patients experience a great deal of loneliness and isolation.
The truth is that the problem is not limited to our patients. Many LHC Group employees – serving around the nation and in all kinds of roles – face this same issue. Sometimes, no matter what the time of year, life gets hard for all of us.
After everything we’ve been through over the last two years – helping people during an unprecedented time in the healthcare industry – we need to be sure we are helping ourselves, because, as always, it’s all about helping people.
Helping Employees Find the Self-care They Need - The Front Porch The problem is – we are not always so good at getting the care we need for ourselves, especially mental or emotional care. That’s a big reason why LHC Group offers our Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Each year, when influenza (flu) season rolls around, clinicians and providers are frequently asked about flu vaccines – their efficacy, side-effects, etc. This season, with the COVID pandemic still upon us, the questions often revolve around whether the regular seasonal flu shot is still recommended.
