Beverley Hills Church Preschool
An arts-based cooperative preschool in Alexandria, VA inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.
Our cooperative school has its roots in progressive American educational philosophy and practices, and its inspiration today from more recent research in cognitive and cultural studies. For the past 15 years we have been influenced by the early childhood educational approach of the Reggio Emilia schools of Italy.
What a busy last full week of school it has been: Sing-Along with real drums and a homemade lemonade stand organized by our after-school explorers. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

Philosophy Night at BHCP!
This essential event brings parents and teachers together to discuss the concept of the "image of the child", a cornerstone of the Reggio-Emilia approach to early childhood education. During the event, our parents participated in the exploration of their own image of the child by crafting collages centered around their children's self-portraits. The fascinating results were then shared with the children in class the following day.
We embrace our great community of learners, here at BHCP!
Our first Board Meeting in 2024. It's January, Monday evening, almost 9 pm, and thanks to our wonderful parents who all serve on committees or on the board to run our school, we have some exciting projects in our pipeline:
- DEI library
- Art Exhibition
- Roundtable "Kindergarten Readiness"
..to name just a few. We will follow up with more information soon!
Observation from our Blue Class teachers:
One of the benefits of starting our day on the playground is that we get to see our area first thing in the morning, undisturbed by anyone.
During this time, several of the children
noticed sparkles on the playground, particularly the wooden
structures, as the first rays of the Sun hit the surfaces.
We noticed that the frost was white and seemed fluffy.
With our space being vacant over the break, water collected in
the covers on the mud kitchen table. With the cold
temperatures, the water partially froze. Friends were very
excited to be able to pick up delicate pieces of ice from the
table.
On Tuesday, the water was more solidly frozen and took
some effort to break. We wondered where the water came from,
how did it get there? Why did it freeze a little bit the first day?
Why was it thicker and harder to break (the second day)? Why
is ice slippery? Where do you find ice? We hope to continue our
investigations into our natural, Winter world!
Fall is always a busy time at BHCP. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we are proud to announce that we have donated over 300 pounds of food to the local ALIVE! program during our . Our children became very excited about collecting food items and preparing donation bags while learning what it means to share with others in need.
On our last day of school, we hosted our traditional Stone Soup event. The purpose of Stone Soup is to bring our community together and give the children a sense of the meaning of through the telling of the old fable "Stone Soup." After this celebration, we enjoyed a home-cooked meal together.
Each class, with the help of some parents, plays a role in preparing for this gathering - cutting vegetables for the soup, baking corn muffins, and crafting beautiful decorations.
The strong at BHCP is what makes it extraordinary, and we are grateful for these meaningful connections.
How do you celebrate this special time?
Happy Thanksgiving!
