Golly gumdrops! Great fun was had by all on Sunday as guests learned about Alexandria’s architecture in the historic ballroom + designed their own creations using everything from pretzels to gum. Do you recognize any architectural elements in their facades?

For World Architecture Day, let's take a closer look at bricks. Have you ever noticed patterns in the brick formations on many historic buildings? These are called brick bonds + each pattern has a specific name + purpose. The front of Gadsby's Tavern is in a Flemish Bond where the long side of the brick (stretcher) alternates with the short side (header). This pattern was often used on the front facades because it was aesthetically pleasing.

We were so thrilled to host two descendants from the Irwin family in June! Sarah Fleming + Mary Kowalski first realized their connection to Gadsby’s by doing family genealogy. The Irwins owned the City Tavern building for 114 years while tavernkeepers over the decades leased the operation. Sarah & Mary toured the Museum + got to explore the Irwin Papers archival collection, acquired for the Museum by the Gadsby's Tavern Museum Society. The large archival collection will be cataloged + made digitally available through the Museum’s webpage in the years ahead. We are looking forward to having Mary + Sarah back at the tavern the next time they are in Alexandria!

What are these things? And how do they relate to 18th century life? Find out this summer from the Junior Docents at Gadsby's Tavern Museum! Every Sunday June 19 through Labor Day weekend from 2-5 p.m., guests will meet Junior Docents (grades 4 and older) and learn about the history of early America and *chocolate!* Don't miss the hands-on demonstration of historic chocolate making in the Ballroom. This program is back after COVID thanks to the support from American Heritage Chocolate!
