Did you know that July is Disability Pride Month?

This year’s theme “We Want A Life Like Yours” comes from the Arc’s National Council of Self Advocates. It aims to to reflect the dream for life and experiences from the disability community.

Disability Pride Month happens every July to mark the ADA’s anniversary, which was passed back in July 26, 1990. The first celebration was a Disability Pride Day that took place in Boston in 1990. Chicago hosted the first Disability Pride Parade in 2004.

As we celebrate this year’s Disability Pride Month, may we continue to show kindness and respect to all.

Despite some pushback, Disney is moving forward with major changes to its Disability Access Service (DAS) to address concerns about program abuse.

Starting June 18, new DAS policies will be in effect at Walt Disney World in Florida, with Disneyland in California following on June 18.

DAS allows guests with disabilities to request return times for attractions to avoid waiting in line. However, Disney reports that DAS usage has tripled in the last five years, leading to longer waits for those who genuinely need it. To combat this, Disney is revamping DAS to better serve its intended users.

In honor of Women’s History Month, let me introduce you to Bridget “Biddy” Mason

She may not be the founder of Los Angeles, but she left an indelible mark on the city's downtown area. Born into slavery, she journeyed alongside her owner, Robert Smith, as he traversed the nation. Upon arriving in California, where slavery was prohibited, Mason courageously petitioned the courts for her freedom and that of her family, succeeding in her quest.

Embracing her newfound liberty, Mason diligently pursued a career as a nurse and midwife until she accumulated sufficient funds to venture into real estate. With a shrewd eye for investment, she acquired 10 acres of land for a mere $250, upon which she constructed rental properties and later expanded to a significant commercial edifice.

This strategic acquisition ultimately laid the foundation for what is now the bustling heart of downtown Los Angeles.
