I made myself stronger 💪
What happened to you is valid even if it doesn’t look like what someone else thinks trauma should look like.
Remember: the trauma is not your fault but healing is your responsibility.
In my new book Cleaning up Your Mental Mess I share how to identify trauma that may be causing toxic thinking habits and how to rewire your brain using mind-management. Get your copy ON SALE here: https://drleaf.com/collections/all/products/mental-health-solution-bundle

Thank you Demi Lovato for sharing the benefit of counseling. If you or a loved one is considering counseling give me a call. I would love the opportunity to see if I am a good fit for you and if not, I can help you find a local counselor that is.

Wow this is helpful for our telehealth sessions.
Boundaries are our clear lines + limits.
Most of us were conditioned to dismiss our boundaries. We had parents who ignored them or unconsciously invalidated them. Ex: You don’t want to play with a friend + your mom says “just go play with her” Or ignoring privacy boundaries by snooping or reading a journal.
Many of us didn’t see adults modeling healthy boundaries in their own relationships. I know that I didn’t witness this, so my work was to practice (over + over) setting boundaries.
And I fully understand how uncomfortable it is. Highly uncomfortable!
Some ways to know you weren’t modeled boundaries:
1. You feel fear/guilt/shame around declining to do something you don’t want to do
2. You question if you have a ‘right’ to have time to yourself or if you’re being ‘selfish’
3. You have a difficult time understanding if the emotional response of other people is your responsibility: you don’t know what’s ‘yours’ or ‘theirs’
When we set boundaries, we are not looking to control another person. It’s important to understand that everyone has a right to feel the way they do about the boundaries we set. All we can control is our response. We can resist explaining. And, we can follow through even when we discomfort.
This is the path to self empowerment. To restoring our self worth. And to avoiding the resentment that comes from not honoring our limit.
What’s the hardest part of boundaries for you?
I have to admit I have said this before, but now I know there is a better way. I am always learning new ways to support parents and children. Parents, teachers, and caregivers don’t be hard on yourself for doing what you know. Still we can be open to learning new!
