This week, members of our Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) committee attended the annual Buffalo Niagara Partnership DEI Symposium. We were proud to represent our organizations there with a sincere effort in continuous learning and networking with like-minded professionals who are committed to improving DEI in the workplace!🤝

The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge was a blast!!! Thank to you BSC team members who participated in the race and attended the tent party!

Today, we were privileged to spend time with New York State Senator Sean M. Ryan, whose district includes Amherst, where we at Buffalo Surgery Center are located. We provided State Senator Ryan and his deputy Chief of Staff a tour of our orthopaedic and gastrointestinal/colorectal buildings, and we implored upon the senator the importance of ambulatory surgery centers, like BSC, in providing quality, safe, and efficient care for quality-of-life surgeries and life-saving cancer screenings. Advocacy at both the state and national levels help shine a light on ambulatory surgery centers, how they help the fabric of health care, and promote legislation that benefits patients and ASCs alike! Buffalo Surgery Center has a new addition, thanks to the selfless, team-focused, and service-driven efforts of our team members! We are proudly growing our own vegetable garden!😍🌱

♻️Jeff Adams repurposed pallets that supplies were delivered to us on to create the raised gardens.
🔨Dr. Kory Reed created the large garden, mulched, and installed the fence.
🤝And several team members are actively caring for and planting our first-ever BSC garden!

Burger Day 2024 was a great way for our team members to finish out last week and start their Memorial Day weekend, and our leadership hopes it added a little brightness to their day on Friday! Thank you to all team members for your steadfast, excellent patient care provided every day, no matter the circumstance!

Buffalo Surgery Center was proud to host last week's Western New York regional meeting of The New York State Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers! Members and leaders of ASCs from around the region and state discussed patient care, industry changes, and business relationships. Kathy Regan and Kristen Jackson delivered tours of our recently completed expansion, including new operating rooms, new sterilization equipment, and our post-op physical therapy recovery area. Last but not least, we recognize Amber Scherer, RN, and Elaine Dersam, RN. Amber and Elaine are pictured on each side of manager Melissa. Happy National Nurses Week! Although the American Nurses Association designates a week in May each year to recognize nursing professionals, anyone in the healthcare setting knows these individuals are compassionate, patient-centered, essential professionals year-round! Today, we recognize Sierra Cremeno, LPN, pictured right, with manager Heather. Sierra is a licensed practical nurse in Buffalo Surgery Center's orthopaedic preoperative unit. Thank you, Sierra!👏

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, we're taking extra steps to acknowledge this month's importance, including a mental health-specific shirt that our team members can wear not only in May, but also all year round as a sometimes very needed reminder that you matter, and how you feel matters. We're empowering our team members to know about and take advantage of our company's Employee Assistance Program, which provides free resources and additional mental and emotional wellbeing help. And we're encouraging all to register for The Good Climb Endurance Challenge, an endurance event we're proud to sponsor that aims to improve mental health through physical activity while raising money for youth mental health services.

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL Buffalo Surgery Center team members, whose work over the past couple of years helped us reach the finish line of our multi-year expansion! Last week, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate that milestone and accomplishment, and we're thankful to have been joined by the Amherst Chamber of Commerce, Erie County Legislator Jeanne Vinal, Amherst Town Councilmember Mike Szukala, and many of our wonderful community and business partners. It is an honor and privilege to continue to deliver patient-centered, safe healthcare to the residents of Western New York.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month continues! Colonoscopies can do more than just screen for cancer. The procedure can also remove polyps and take tissue to biopsy. It is the best way to screen for and prevent colorectal cancer BEFORE it starts!

We celebrated a big milestone last week! It's officially been one whole year since our brand new Endoscopy unit opened in its own building, expanding our capabilities and increasing the number of patients we can care for. To mark the occasion, our Endoscopy team members were treated to ice cream sundaes!🍨

GI Procedure and Processing Manager Melissa Mucklow did the numbers: In the past year, we have proudly performed 16,364 scopes and cared for 14,954 patients! Thank you to our amazing staff for making the past 365 days a success. Ever upward!

International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century with it first being acknowledged in 1911. This year’s theme is Inspire Inclusion. In celebration of today, Excelsior and Buffalo Surgery Center, through our DEI and Blue Crew Committees, hosted two speakers from the WNY Women's Foundation.

Ms. Mara Montante, Knowledge Management Coordinator, and Ms. Sydney Flanagan, ALL IN Coordinator joined us at lunch, sharing their insights and discussing challenges women face, including childcare for working women (and men), gender pay equity gaps, and how we can influence change. More than 30 Excelsior and BSC team members took part in this engaging conversation. Thank you, Mara and Sydney, for your time, and Happy International Women's Day!

Welcome to March! March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and the American College of Gastroenterology wants to share the message that YOU can prevent colorectal cancer! Newer guidelines suggest people start their screenings earlier. Check back throughout the month on other tips and facts about the benefits of getting screened!

Here at Buffalo Surgery Center, we're getting ready to recognize Team Member Appreciation Week in March. It's a week where we acknowledge the MANY types of professionals who work at BSC and Excelsior. National Employee Appreciation Day is March 1, but we try to take it a step further with a week of fun things like giveaways every day, lunch, and more. Let's get an early start by recognizing one of our behind the scenes departments: Billing! Our billing staff are an integral part of our administration, helping sort everything from complicated cases to spending time on the phone to help a patient pay their bill online. We're so glad this group recently had the opportunity to go out and celebrate each other! And although this team doesn't always get front and center attention, we're just as thankful for all they do.👏

Happy CRNA Week! Buffalo Surgery Center is proud to recognize its own talented, dedicated team of nurse anesthetists. For over 150 years, CRNAs nationwide have administered more than 50 million anesthetics annually. At BSC, the CRNAs are the backbone of the Anesthesiology department and have helped revolutionize and expand care. Thank you, nurse anesthetists, for all you do!

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we recognize the legacy of Dr. King Jr.

What a weekend!❄️ Buffalo Surgery Center will open at 9:00am tomorrow, Monday, January 15. We are notifying patients who this affects.

Team members should report to BSC at 8am.

As 2023 comes to end, we recognize that this year was one of historic growth for Buffalo Surgery Center...growth that would not have been possible without the innovative and team-focused attitudes of BSC's team members and leadership, working together through back-to-back projects, construction, triumphs, and more.

This year alone, we launched our robotic knee program in February. In March, Endoscopy moved into its new home at 3915 Sheridan, where its expansion allowed for steady volume growth. In April, we created our in-house anesthesia department, bringing on Dr. Ramsdell and a team of nurse anesthetists, with another anesthesiologist on the way. In October, we received our AAAHC re-accreditation, an important certification that recognizes high quality patient care, patient safety standards, and continuous improvement. And in December, we opened three of our four new operating rooms and expanded our pre-operative and recovery spaces.

Thank you to every team member of our organization who made these tremendous accomplishments possible. Happy New Year! YOU deserve it!👏🍾

BIG NEWS! Two of our brand new operating rooms are officially OPEN! This marks the completion of Phase 2 of our orthopaedics building expansion project. Phase 3 will continue through January. We are so excited to continue to improve the patient experience!
