What's hitting the stage in November! 🤩
Happy Opening to Costa Mesa Playhouse and their production of 'Killer Joe'!
"Director Chris Mertan calls the play “both a deep-fried pulp thriller and a pitch-black dark comedy – think those sorts of murder-for-hire crime stories by Jim Thompson or the noirs the Coen Brothers used to make.”
The Smiths “are an almost farcical trailer-trash family who hire Joe to do a hit so they can score some insurance money. Of course, it all goes to hell – violence, betrayal, all the fun Faustian bargains.”
The show, Mertan says, “has been a labor of love I’ve been working toward for almost 20 years, when I first saw it. Immediately, I was struck by what I can only describe as its poetic vulgarity.”

Get ready to experience the electrifying mind behind Rent! Before Jonathan Larson revolutionized Broadway, he was a young man struggling to make his mark. This autobiographical musical, set in 1990, is a raw, humorous, and heartfelt journey of a composer on the brink of turning 30—waiting tables and wondering if he’ll ever write that soaring song that will change everything. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, and his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue. Will he give up his dream and sell out just to keep the lights on? Will he lose the love of his life? Scored by music that redefined a genre, Tick, Tick… Boom! takes you on the writer’s journey that led to a Broadway blockbuster. It’s a must-see for anyone who’s ever chased a dream. If you loved Rent, this show will speak to your soul. Another spine-tingling show to add to your spooky fun this month! Happy opening to "Second Death of a Mad Wife" at Ophelia's Jump Productions
"Just in time for the Halloween season, “Second Death of a Mad Wife” has its world premiere at Ophelia’s Jump Productions. Audiences will journey into the darkest corners of the human mind as this new work takes the stage in October.
Directed by Beatrice Casagran, the play centers on Florence Maybrick, a woman tormented by her own memories and haunted by her past. Maybrick was a real person, and Casagran describes her as “an unreliable narrator who suffers from dementia and possibly an addiction to arsenic.” Casagran is the founder and Producing Artistic Director of Ophelia’s Jump Productions (OJP) and is passionate about telling stories that center on women’s experiences. “I’ve always been drawn to plays that challenge the audience to ask questions,” Casagran explains. “With Ophelia’s Jump, our mission has always been to produce works that highlight women’s voices and experiences. This new work fits perfectly into that mission.”

Happy Opening to 'All Shook Up' Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company!
"The 2004 jukebox musical by Joe DiPietro features the Elvis Presley songbook, with DiPietro drawing inspiration for his story and characters from Shakespeare’s comedies in general, and “Twelfth Night” in particular.
The extensive Elvis playlist includes the title number, “Jailhouse Rock,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fools Fall in Love,” “Love Me Tender,” and many more.
Shakespeare and Elvis? Definitely eclectic.
The show takes a look at a small, unnamed U.S. town, circa the ’50s, that literally gets “all shook up” when a leather-clad, hip-swiveling, guitar-playing roustabout rides in, his presence having an immediate effect on everyone.
Now, Yorba Linda Spotlight Players is about to unveil a new production, with troupe leader Charna Lopez directing and choreographing."

Happy opening to 'Young Frankenstein' Z Playhouse
'With Halloween around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better for Z Playhouse to stage “Young Frankenstein.” This production is a perfect blend of spooky fun, making it an ideal addition to the theatre’s seasonal lineup. Stephen Zygo, President of Z Playhouse, promises that “Young Frankenstein” will be an unforgettable experience, packed with laugh-out-loud moments and stellar performances from a talented cast.
“Young Frankenstein” is a large-scale production, and the team was eager to bring its bold, over-the-top elements to life in a more intimate, minimalist setting. With limited space for elaborate sets, the creative decision was made to embrace the simplicity of the venue, turning it into an advantage that highlights the ingenuity of the performance.
“It really helps that the entire script is treated with sincerity. It's played straight, even though much of it is absurd and silly,” said Director Julia Barbee, who also serves as Artistic Director at Z Playhouse. “Mel Brooks is one of the greatest comedy writers, and many of the jokes are so iconic that fans of the movie will immediately recognize them, creating a playful connection with the audience. The show knows exactly when it's giving a wink to the crowd.”'

'Gloria' opens this weekend at Chance Theater!
"Marya Mazor, the director of Chance Theater’s upcoming Orange County premiere of “Gloria” by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, views the experience of staging this sharp, satirical comedy as both a challenge and an opportunity to dive into the complexities of ambition, workplace dynamics, and the cost of success. With over 25 years of freelance directing experience, Mazor brings a wealth of knowledge to this production, having directed in various spaces, including Disneyland’s live stage shows and the Alley Theatre. While this marks her first time working on Jacobs-Jenkins' material, Mazor is already familiar with his voice, having seen another one of his productions, “Appropriate”. She’s eager to explore the intricacies of “Gloria” with her creative team and cast.
Set in a literary magazine office in New York City in the 2010s, “Gloria” follows a group of ambitious twenty-something editorial assistants as they vie for attention, opportunities, and promotions. These young professionals are driven by both internal and external pressures to succeed before turning 30. Navigating the challenges of modern media, where opportunities are scarce, and competition is fierce, the characters are willing to sacrifice their integrity-- and each other-- to climb the corporate ladder."

Agatha Christie's longest running who-done-it hits the SoCal stage at Renaissance Theatre Company. 'The Mousetrap' opens this weekend!
"Directed by Sarah Jane Finch, “The Mousetrap” transports the audience to Monkswell Manor, where “seven strangers arrive, and with the late arrival of Sergeant Trotter, they realize there is a murderer amongst them and as they try to figure out who done it-- so does the audience,” she describes the plot. The play keeps audiences guessing, and everyone is a suspect."
“Attention to detail is key,” Finch adds, “and it is brought to life by Green, who is pulling double duty as costume designer, and Marc Denton, who is the props master. Green has kept [the costumes] authentic and true to the time period of 1950s England in winter, perhaps to the dismay of the actors wearing them since we are currently having a Southern California heat wave while they are deep into rehearsals. Even the newspapers will be of the time and place. We can’t fake it and they can’t be current with the audience being seated so close,” Finch discloses. “We even hired dramaturg Talia Hirsch to help the actors and crew and to bring those pieces of history to light. England was still in a state of depression at that time, and we needed those details to build onto our vision.”
The Larking House Theatre Company's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' hits the stage at Chance Theater the next two weekends.
"As one of Shakespeare’s most popular and beloved comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is filled with rich elements from folklore, literature, nature, mythology, and the supernatural. It tells of the whims, desires, and impulses of love, both mortal and fantastical.
This production by The Larking House Theatre Company stays pretty true to the source material. Without anything wildly unseen as far as concept goes, director Lizzy McCabe believes the overall ex*****on of the show, the cast as a whole, and the aesthetic of the design are all particularly special."
