Pete’s flowers .
To you who have heard the story scroll on .
To our new people , here is the story of Pete’s Flowers .
Years ago our garden was out in the pasture .
We grew a garden along with hard shelled gourds and to make it easier I had the garden in the field altho keeping deer and huge jackrabbits out of it was a challenge .
Each morning I would pick my garden , the garden was seen from Palm Avenue .
I had a gentleman who would drive by very early and yell from the road if I was done picking yet ?
He had a specific request .
Okra .
Not just any okra , very small okra.
His wife who had cancer liked to chew on it raw .
Now I was never one to specifically pick to specifications but in this case it seemed the nice thing to do .
He would drive his old blue van into the field and I asked him to show me what size he was looking for .
He stepped out of the van and promptly took his shoes off .
He told me that wet grass on feet was the best thing ever and that I should try it sometime .
Pete was of Asian descent .
I just thought it was a thing he did and never paid mind to it .
He admired the sunflowers towering in the garden , said he used to drive by them with his wife seeing them from the road and would talk me into picking a few for his wife which I would always do .
He would wrap them in newspaper , grab the okra and away he would go till the next visit .
Sometimes I would deliver the okra and sunflowers to him .
He owned a mini trampoline and even though he was elderly he used to exercise on it , he always told me excercise was important and kept him going .
Pete’s wife eventually passed on and some time later Pete passed as well .
That spring when he passed it was before I had planted the garden .
I looked into the garden area to find hundreds yes hundreds of sunflowers popping out of the ground .
My husband had tilled the ground in anticipation of spring planting but they were everywhere !
Pete’s memorial was set at our church and I had an idea .
I took the plants out of the ground and put them into pots , cups whatever I could find .
I took them to the memorial and gave them out and told everyone to plant them in Pete’s honor .
We had sunflowers coming up all over the valley after that ❤️🌻🌻🌻
I have planted sunflowers every year in memory of Pete .
He was a special kind of guy , the kind of guy you don’t forget .
Have I taken my shoes off in the wet pasture grass ?
I have not , but I will someday .
Thinking of you today Pete and every time I look at my sunflowers .

A very good customer of mine brought me a few things yesterday .
She knows my love for birds on the farm .
We have a new covy of quail that I have been putting water out for and that we feed with the other birds including lots of dove and this year more finches than I’ve ever seen .
She has a friend who crafts some pretty neat things .
One was a squirrel / bird feeder that looks like a fishing kreel .
I’m going to use it for the quail .
The other was the cutest birdhouse complete with “ palm” trees made out of wine corks with foliage on top and lawn .
The gentleman who made these sure creates some neat things .
The birdhouse is up by the produce shed and I already seen a feather out there today which tells me we may have residents soon .
Since it’s been so hot this year we’ve been making sure the birds have food and water .
Thank you Lynn , it was so nice to meet you in person and I love the things you brought me ❤️
And the birds say tweet tweet tweet 🎶🎶🎶

I got a bag of canning jars and egg cartons this morning .
I’m just in awe of you guys .
And another customer just offered to bring me flower jars ❤️
I used to use canning jars for my flowers , they are just too expensive anymore to do that but the glass jars you guys bring me work great for flowers ❤️
And these here jars will be washed , sanitized and filled with yummy preserves .
Thank you thank you thank you .
I’m so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful customers .
Thanks for egg cartons , bags and jars . So much appreciated .

Canning food has always been a part of my life .
My grandma Avila always had jars of canned food in her porch pantry .
It was always well stocked
It was where she had her laundry room complete with an old timey washboard .
She was old fashioned and from Portugal .
She knew how to cook anything .
When they harvested an animal she used every bit of it including the organs which quite frankly kind of used to freak me out 🤣
It was very common for her to bring a bucket with a cow heart and liver right into the kitchen and she would promptly cook them up , to say I was not a fan was an understatement 🤣
She could kill , butcher and clean a chicken in record time and I was always amazed at how much she knew how to do .
She cooked fava beans and had the best red raspberry plants you ever saw .
I remember picking the velvety soft berries as a kid and they were my favorite besides blackberries .
My mom was a canner as well , tomatoes, pears , pickles and anything we grew .
One thing I did not like however was canned squash , I will never eat canned squash again .
She was quite the cook and her rhubarb pies were the best .
Today I made up two batches of jam .
One blackberry batch and one four berry batch of jam with blackberries, red raspberries, blueberries and strawberries .
The blackberries I grew .
Unfortunately after all the hot weather the berries burned up, it happens, but I did manage to freeze about 6 bags of berries before that happened .
There is no better smell than homemade jam cooking on the stove . ❤️
The cabinet was empty so it was time to fill it back up !

Today was busy , like almost can’t keep up busy .
We opened at 8 and I had quite a bit of tomatoes out there .
Lots of people with plans for sauce or a sandwich and they are pretty much gone .
I had some pretty upset people , upset that the 48 pounds I picked were not there when they got here .
I’m one person , I do my best .
I pick tomatoes and veggies every day , I’m up at about 5:30 getting things ready and open the gate at 8.
I got bummed out that people were upset with what was left after we were so busy .
I’m going to have to ask for your patience .
I’m not Walmart or Safeway .
I’m a girl nick- named Coco , working her hardest to do a good job and trying to do her best please be kind .
I’m going to turn this morning into a good one .
Here is a video of the birds in the garden , let’s all just have a good day 😎

Photos from Wogoman's Farm's post 07/20/2024

I spent about 8 hours today canning up some pasta sauce .
I mean if I’m going to grow tomatoes I might as well make something out of them , grew the garlic and onions as well if the ground squirrels would have left my peppers alone I could have used those too 🤣
Truth be told organic pasta sauce in the store is really expensive and going up it seems every day .
Even cut and stewed tomatoes are over 1$ a can .
And who knows where the tomatoes are from that made it .
So today I made up some sauce that I promised I would share the process of .
It does take time but trust me it’s worth it .
This recipe using 25 # of tomatoes made 11 quarts and two pints of sauce .
You can gather them over a span of a few days if need be .
Just let them set on the counter in boxes till you have enough .
The recipe is from the Taste Of Home and a simple google search will find it but I added it onto the pics .
It’s really good and my favorite way to make sauce .
Supplies:
Two good sized stock pots or if you have a large roaster pan you can use that .
Two large bowls
One medium bowl with a strainer
Slotted spoon or pasta spoon
Spatula
Wooden spoon with long handle
Paring knife and slicing knife
Glass measuring cup ( 1 cup size works)
Two small plates
Sauce jar filler ( don’t know the name of this it’s a tool that sits in your jar to cleanly fill it you don’t have to have one just makes it easier to fill)you don’t necessarily need it .
Paper towels to wipe rim of jars
Jars and lids - quarts /pints if small amount left over to use the rest of the sauce up .
Jar lifter
Towel
Potholders
Food processor
Ingredients listed in pics .
Each pic will have instructions .

Core tomatoes, place in boiling water , put into ice water to slip skins, cut into quarters, chop veggies , add spices and oil, mix , cook for 4 hours, ready jars ( sanitize and heat) , place lemon juice in bottom of jars, fill jars , top jars after cleaning rim, finger tighten process for 40 minutes .
Remove from water bath and cool .
Enjoy the recipe and pics any questions please ask !
I’d be happy to help guide you .
I’ll be making two more batches to least me through till next season .
I only had two jars left from last time I did this . ❤️

Excited is not even the word I can use for something planned for the farm .
For years I’ve always loved the fact barns had signs , names or things painted on them .
My dad’s old milk bottling plant had a picturesque mural in the barn .
Old barns in the Arcata and Ferndale area have great examples .
It has always been a dream of mine to have a mural on our produce barn .
There is quite a bit of history in our old shed .
It actually used to be an old milking parlor .
In the back you can see where they milked the cows .
I had taken an art class in Red bluff to paint a buffalo , I won’t show you my work but let’s just say I’m not an artist 🤣
I had no idea this particular artist did murals until yesterday when I saw her work for the Red Bluff Roundup .
I contacted her and am pleased to say we are in the planning stages for a mural for the farm .
It will include Pete’s flowers of course and bees cause bees make the world go round if you ask me and are so important to farmers and our farm ❤️🐝
So it will take a bit cause she’s booked up right now, but I’m on the list !
Thank you to Lacy Wilson Art for taking on this task !

Good morning people ☀️🌅
What a great day out there today .
If you like tomatoes then here is your sign .
They are ripening and we have got a great selection .
All different types and sizes .
From cherry tomatoes to the beefsteak we are the place !
Not bad prices either .
2$ a basket for the cherry tomatoes and 1$ a lb for the slicer tomatoes .
That will save you 3$ a lb or more from the farmers market !
This weekend I saw 4.75 $ a lb and 4$ a basket at a farmers market in town by a bridge .
Save some $$ and shop with us 👍🏼
And as always no sprays or bad stuff here .
All natural .
I’m taking out some green beans that did not do well in the heat but new ones are already up and growing just sowed last week ❤️
That’s farming for you . The heat was relentless and the one variety of bean could not handle it .
Either could I !🥵
Today we have squash , zucchini, slicer cucumbers , pickling cucumbers, cherry tomatoes , slicer tomatoes , long beans , brown eggs , goat milk soap and more !

Another warm day out there today .
I was moving sprinklers and sweating at 8 am 🤣
At that point you just get under the field sprinkler 🤣
Yesterday I made up some of my chocolate zucchini bread .
If you don’t like chocolate emit the cocoa and chocolate chips .
It’s a good recipe for zucchini bread I got out of a cookbook from my nana years ago .
Of course I had to add chocolate .
Let’s hope we get a cool down soon .
Keeping the chickens cool and the cows on cool just watered pasture has been a full time job lately .
I’ve been letting the “ lawn “ grass grow a bit taller .
Two benefits of this , uses less gas to mow and also keeps the lawn green .
And an added plus is all the bees attracted to the flowers and clovers in the “ lawn “.
It’s not much of a lawn , it’s full of fruit trees .
One section has four grape arbors , a pear tree, plum tree, walnut , almonds, four apples and two peach trees .
All on one side of our lawn .
That’s the way lawns should be , full of food to eat and anyone can do it .
Have a great Friday and weekend everyone .

Good morning people !

Have I told you how much I love my chickens ❤️🐓
There is something relaxing about feeding them , collecting eggs and talking to them .
Yes !
I talk to my chickens .
I do have my favorites .they follow me around the yard .
I can feed them from a little white cup too .
During the winter I’m cleaning the pen about once a week or so changing the chips out about once every couple weeks .
Summer brings new challenges , the heat 🥵
I did not get to cleaning out the pen till late afternoon and it was still 109 out but had to be done .
The bedding was cleaned out , new shavings added new hay into the laying boxes , food storage containers cleaned , feeders and waters cleaned , dried ( took about 10 minutes in the heat ) and refilled .
Things dusted , yes I dust my chicken pen ( tin chicken and signs).
It was so hot !
My chickens deserve to be pampered and kept clean .
We have been letting them out in the afternoon , mornings bring too many hawks and they can kill a chicken in a flash so afternoon works better for my chickens safety .
We rearranged the laying totes and changed out to old dresser drawers .
The chickens were really mad we changed up the laying crates and cackled quite loudly showing protest to the larger accommodations .
They jumped in and out of the drawers and finally layed eggs in them last night 🤣
I moved some of the water trays to the outside pen area and left one inside the pen .
Chickens cool with their feet .
They love a big Costco tote lid to cool their feet in .
I change the water twice daily .
They are very messy 🤣
Their drinking water bottles hanging from the ceiling are cleaned out and filled daily as well to keep cool fresh water in them .
But I know doing this saves them during the heat waves like we are having now .

When you are picking green beans and notice somebody’s watching you 🤣
Flash is quite the gardening companion .
He was waiting for me to throw him a cucumber , squash or tomatoe .
So spoiled .
One of my good friends who happens to be a customer stopped by today to bring me jars and egg cartons .
She also brought me a granite cup .
She knows I love all things old .
Perfect with a hibiscus flower floating in it ❤️
Thank you Vicki ❤️

Picking the garden today and noticing how huge the Armenian cucumber plant is .
It’s taking up a whole corner of the garden !
If you have never tried an Armenian cucumber you should .
First of all they are burpless and won’t hurt your tummy .
Also you do not peel them !
They are ribbed and look really pretty when you slice them.
Today I made some breakfast with Armenian cucumbers and tomatoes ( yellow , sun gold cherry and a brandywine tomatoe), , salt and pepper and Italian dressing .
I added onions when I noticed I forgot them, It’s so refreshing.
Then I cooked up one squash, stir fried , added one small green onion, one egg and Mexican rice .
Topped with protein ( chicken cooked in my George Foreman grill ) and a sprinkle of smoked paprika .
I just started using smoked paprika on this dish and it’s so good !
This breakfast took about 5 minutes total .
The chicken I had cooked yesterday .
I love summer because that is when I eat best which is usually fresh stuff from the garden .
If you can , grow a garden !

Common questions :
When do you open ? 8:00 am
When do you close ? Dusk or sold out .
Where are you at ? Corner of Palm Avenue and Monte Vista Road Happy Valley .
South side of Monte Vista .
Do I go to the front gate ? No, go to the Monte vista side gate , small gate with a sign on it open / closed .
If you go to the palm Avenue gate it says to use the Monte vista gate .
If you go to the corner of Palm and Monte vista there is a sign with arrows that says to use the Monte vista gate .
Will you hold things , we cannot due to people not picking things up when others are already here .
What days are you closed ? Usually open every day but if we are planning to close we will post !
Today I had taken pictures of produce but got busy and did not post .
We only have cucumbers, green tomatoes and one dozen eggs left everything else is sold out .
Busy morning .
We picked a few green tomatoes .
Everyone has been asking about them and wouldn’t you know it no one took any today 🤦🏼‍♀️
So will try for a few more days then no more green tomatoes till the end of the season .
And when you pick out tomatoes and take them home DO NOT put them in the fridge .
Takes the flavor right out of them .
Set them on the counter . They will be just fine .
I pick a few almost ready so you can enjoy one in a day or two .
Have a good day out there !
I included a map of our farm since some can’t find us .

We are open .
Boy I just needed a day of rest yesterday due to this heat .
I’m from the coast and no matter how many years I live here it’s still hard to adjust to this heat .
Today we have large brown eggs , kale , squash and zucchini , green beans , slicing cucumbers , pickling cucumbers ( just a few ), long beans, and tomatoes .
Pretty soon we will have trays of tomatoes trust me .
Our garden is big but not too big so that I can handle it since it’s just me who picks the garden .
Really looking forward to my husband retiring in a few months so I can have some help out there 🤣
I’m the garden lady for sure but he can help me with picking , especially tomatoes !
Our tomatoes don’t look perfect , they are not perfect sized for sure but let me tell you they taste better than any hot house or store bought tomatoes !
And they don’t get sprayed with any kind of anything and we use natural fertilizer .
Have you seen the yellow tomatoes ?
You really need to try them .
Less acidic than red and so good !
They are my favorite .
People are trying the long beans .
Good for you guys . They can be cooked like green beans or chopped and enjoyed in stir fry .
I really like them and you will too !
Try a bunch of them .
Well glad we all made it through that heat spell , looking forward to not so horribly hot weather .
Have a good day everyone .
