5 months ago I was trolled online by a local hater when I posted about West Forty Market being in the running for Ankeny's Best Butcher Shop and Ankeny's Best Grocery Store. I subsequently blocked him after giving him a platform to fire insults at me for many months, because quite honestly he was disrupting my mental energy. And then I never posted about the voting again.

We won both categories.

6 days ago I posted about our epic Labor Day Sale and how much we sold and how much I've loved all of you for the last 3 years and somewhere in all of that, a small number of folks misunderstood my post and thought I was announcing that we were closing. Oops - sorry for the confusion! 🤣

So today, I thought I'd take this opportunity to announce that we are still badass. We're still crushing it. We are apparently still your favorite Meat Dealer in Ankeny (that should be a category, don't you think?!). We still have the absolute best community supporting us. And the hater from April is still blocked.

Thanks for being awesome and so incredibly supportive. And thank you for allowing me to post a photo of the expensive custom flag I ordered many months ago and have yet to use. Sometimes we make solid business decisions and other times, well, we just don't. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news …

Good news: Over 100 of you directly supported a local farmer & small-town locker AND you saved money. BIG MONEY. Over $3,000 in SAVINGS within the first 12 hours of our Labor Day Sale. Our first order came in 42 seconds after the sale started and boy did they come in fast! (When do ya’ll sleep?!).

The bad news: 99% of inventory is exhausted. We’ve made every effort to give you as much inventory as we can … and I’ve tried using my daughter’s magic wand to provide more ground beef but alas, it’s not working.

I wish I could do more. I know things are tough for so many right now - we’re all dealing with higher prices in just about every facet of our lives - so I know even the smallest discount can offer just a bit of relief for a family. We do our absolute best to keep overhead low so that we can keep cost down for you. When I first opened this store 3 years ago, I wanted so badly for the community to have access to some of the best raised meat in the country at an affordable price. I wanted farmers & local lockers to have an outlet for their hard work and I wanted them to be able to SEE their hard work pay off.

When you all show up - whether it’s a sale or not - you are doing just that. You are making a difference with every purchase, every referral, every share on social media … it’s not just me that appreciates you, it’s dozens of small businesses and multiple small farmers & lockers. I think these big sales are the least we can do to show our appreciation.

Local Des Moines peeps - come on out to Confluence tonight!! Beer + Brats - can’t go wrong!

West Forty Market in Ankeny is now making brats with our Des Moines IPA, Farmer John, and Oktoberfest beers! They'll be on-site today for a pop-up event and will have the frozen brats available for purchase (to take home).

If you'd like to give the Oktoberfest brats a try, Hotel Luna Food Truck will have them as a menu item! Catch them from 5-8, or until they sell out.

Our skinless brats are one of my favorite cuts at West Forty. Not only do we have a variety of flavors but I love how easy they cook up AND reheat for leftovers! Whether you're cooking on the grill, stovetop or even in the air fryer, they make for an easy meal - and we've got multiple flavors to choose from.

Skinless pork brats packed with potatoes, onion, cheese and peppers. Our Breakfast Burrito Brats are popular and perfect for every season. They grill up nicely or can easily be cooked on the stovetop or air fryer.

The flavor in these brats is incredible! I love to top them with some maple syrup but I've also seen them topped with sauerkraut on a hoagie bun. They make for an easy + complete meal, that's for sure!

You'll definitely want some for tailgating season ... throw them in a tortilla shell and you're ready to party! 🏈

I take my role as Head of Quality Control very seriously and usually that results in some obsessions. So without further ado, I present to you my current West Forty obsessions, in no particular order...

1: Sterzings Cheddar Popcorn. My fingers are stained orange and I don't even care. This popcorn is legit.

2: Honey Sticks! We know & love Holton Homestead Honey so to have it in a convenient little honey stick is, well, dangerous but also delicious. Perfect for the kiddos or middle aged adults 😉

3: Homemade Salsa. Our friend Stacy whips up this mouth-watering creation with fresh veggies from her garden every year and we always sell out before the snow flies (way to ruin it, Iowa weather). I even used a jar of this in homemade goulash this weekend and it was mighty fine, if I do say so myself. 👩‍🍳

4: Elderberry Syrup from Ridge Road Farms. I love my child but she touches everything and germs are her favorite, so this is always a staple in my house! 😷 Grab some for back to school - safe for kids & adults. We even have a dry tea blend ... yum!

5: Milton Creamery Cheese. Did I eat an entire block of cheese and crackers for lunch today? Yes, yes I did. Not even mad about it. We've got Prairie Breeze, too.

6: Holton Homestead Cinnamon Honey Butter. Ever had the butter at Texas Roadhouse? Well, this is basically the same thing. And it's perfectly acceptable to eat the entire container and a loaf of bread in one sitting.

7: Pasta of the Prairie Meal Kits. Easy. Delicious. My kid loves it. Enough said.

8: Harvest Barn Sweet Breeze Beef Sticks. Remember that Prairie Breeze cheese I mentioned? Ok, so combine that with a beef stick ... If we're out of stock, it's because I ate them all. I have zero control when it comes to these magical sticks of goodness.

9: Homemade Croutons. The perfect blend of sourdough bread, oils, garlic and a baker at Scenic Route Bakery that knows their stuff. Don't have any lettuce? No problem. I eat these by the handful.

You know we love our breakfast around here - mostly because we have some of the best patties, brats, sausage links and bacon on the planet (a little biased, but you get the point 😉).
