This session will be an introduction to the concept of intersectionality, its origin, and its application to patient care as a foundation for participants to build and reflect upon throughout the conference.
In addition to a brief teaching on the concept itself, we will also walk through a general framework for adjusting ways in which clinicians gather information about their patients, assess their own individual competencies in caring for patients of color, evaluate the safety of their clinical spaces, and further brainstorm gaps
in their practices that can be addressed
to provide more comprehensive,
trauma-informed, holistic care.
"My name is Sierra or those who know me professionally refer to me as Bentley. I had two realizations when I graduated high school. I was either going to be a female Neil DE Grasse Tyson or be an IT person (preferably without glasses).
I get a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when I'm able to help someone who struggles with problems when it comes to their technology devices. Information Technology lets me connect with people by solving complex problems while not being classified as a robot (google joke)."
We are SO excited to announce the schedule and link to register for our 2021 Caring for Communities of Color Conference! Go to the link in our bio to register for this years virtual conference!
This virtual, interactive conference aims to amplify the community of providers engaging in health justice work in SE Michigan, and equip current and future providers with tools to serve BIPOC communities. This year’s theme is “Home,” a multifaceted concept not always experienced as safe. For healthcare providers who inherently work in a realm of vulnerability with patients, it is crucial to understand the unique experiences of “Home” for BIPOC patients with intersecting, marginalized identities. Join us for this full-day conference in which we will utilize intersectional frameworks to explore what it feels like to be ‘home,’ and use this understanding to advocate for liberation and justice for BIPOC communities.
Meet Nashia A. Choudhury, MPH, a member of our workshop design team!
